The counsel Eliphaz here gives is good, though, as to Job, it was built upon a false supposition that he was a stranger and enemy to God. Let us beware of slandering our brethren; and if it be our lot to suffer in this manner, let us remember how Job was treated; yea, how Jesus was reviled, that we may be patient. Verse Job 22:30. _HE SHALL DELIVER THE ISLAND OF THE INNOCENT_] The word אי _ai_, which we translate _island_, is most probably the Arabic particle [Arabic] _whosoever, whatsoever, any, whosoever he may be_, as [Arabic] _ai rajuli, whatsoever man he may be_. HE SHALL DELIVER THE ISLAND OF THE INNOCENT - Margin, “the innocent shall deliver the island.” Never was there a more unhappy translation than this; and it is quite clear that our translators had no intelligible idea of the meaning of the passage. What can be meant by “saving the island of the innocent?” The word rendered island (אי _'ı̂y_) commonly means, indeed, an island, or a maritime country; see Isaiah 20:6, note. JOB 22. THIRD SPEECH OF ELIPHAZ. The only new thing that Eliphaz has to say, is definitely to describe the sin of Job! Yet his mildness makes him end with bright promises. JOB 22:1. Is it not to Job's advantage to be pious? Will God chasten him for anything else but sin? Eliphaz would point out that it is Job s advantage to be pious, but he completes his statement by adding that it is no advantage to God. He means that God is too exalted to take any interest in man, except to reward and punish him. Hence the cause of man's calamities cannot be in God, but only in man (Job 22:6).
