1-6 Job's friends now suffered him to speak, and he proceeded in a grave and useful manner. Job had confidence in the goodness both of his cause and of his God; and cheerfully committed his cause to him. Verse Job 27:3. _ALL THE WHILE MY BREATH IS IN ME_] As Job appears to allude to the _creation of Adam_, whom God made out of the dust of the earth, _and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life_, so that _he became a living soul_, the whole of Job's assertion may be no more than a periphrasis for _As long as I live and have my_ _understanding_. Indeed נשמתי _nishmathi_ may be rendered _my mind_ or _understanding_, and רוח אלוה _ruach Eloah, the breath of God, the_ _principle of animal life_, the same that he breathed into Adam; for it is there said, Genesis 2:7, He breathed into his nostrils, נשמת חיים _nismath chaiyim, the breath of lives_, or that principle from which _animal_ and _spiritual_ life proceeds; in consequence of which he became לנפ...

AND THE SPIRIT OF GOD IS IN MY NOSTRILS - As long as I live. The “spirit of God” here means the breath that God breathed into man when he created him, Genesis 2:7. It would seem probable that there was an allusion to that fact by the language here, and that the knowledge of the way in which man was created was thus handed down by tradition....

EXPOSITION JOB 27:1 This chapter divides itself into three distinct portions. In the first, which extends to the end of Job 27:6, Job is engaged in maintaining, with the utmost possible solemnity (verse 2), both his actual integrity (verse 6) and his determination to hold fast his integrity as long as he lives (verses 4-6). In the second (verses 7-10) he implicates a curse upon his enemies. In the third (verses 11-23) he returns to the consideration of God's treatment of the wicked, and retracts the view which he had maintained controversially in Job 24:2, with respect to their prosperity, impunity, and equalization with the righteous in death. ALL THE WHILE MY BREATH [IS] IN ME,.... So long the oath of God would be upon him, or he bound himself under it: AND THE SPIRIT OF GOD [IS] IN MY NOSTRILS; which signifies the same thing. Remember that Job's friends had accused him of having committed some great sin; which would account for his great sorrows. The good man is naturally very indignant, and he uses the strongest possible language to cast away front himself with horror the charges which they brought against him in the day of his grief. Job 27:1. _Moreover Job continued his parable, and said, As God liveth, who hath taken away my judgment; and the Almighty, who hath vexed my soul; all the while my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils, my tips shall not speak wickedness, nor my tongue utter deceit._ He felt that; it would be wicked for him to confess to what he had never done; it would be deceit for him to acknowledge crimes which he had never committed.
