Job 35:3

_FOR THOU SAIDST, WHAT ADVANTAGE WILL IT BE UNTO THEE? AND, WHAT PROFIT SHALL I HAVE, IF I BE CLEANSED FROM MY SIN?_ Explanatory of "this" in Job 35:2, 'For thou sayest (to thyself, as if a distinct person), What advantage is it (thy integrity) to thee? What profit have I (by, integrity) more than (I should have) by my sin?' - i:e., more than if I had sinned (Job 34:9). Job had said that the wicked, who use these very words, do not suffer for it (Job 21:13); whereby he virtually sanctioned their sentiments: as also by regarding his own righteousness as giving him a claim to exemption from trials, and therefore considering that as he was nevertheless afflicted, righteousness is of no profit. 1-8 Elihu reproves Job for justifying himself more than God, and called his attention to the heavens. They are far above us, and God is far above them; how much then is he out of the reach, either of our sins or of our services! We have no reason to complain if we have not what we expect, but should be thankful that we have better than we deserve....

Verse Job 35:3. _WHAT ADVANTAGE WILL IT BE UNTO THEE?_] As if he had said to God, "My righteousness cannot profit thee, nor do I find that it is of any benefit to myself." Or perhaps Elihu makes here a general assertion, which he afterwards endeavours to exemplify: Thou hast been reasoning _how_ it may _profit thee_, and thou hast said, "What profit shall I have in righteousness more than in sin?...

FOR THOU SAIDST - Another sentiment of a similar kind which Elihu proposes to examine. He had already adverted to this sentiment of Job in Job 34:9, and examined it at some length, and had shown in reply to it that God could not be unjust, and that there was great impropriety when man presumed to arraign the justice of the Most High. He now adverts to it again in order to show that God could not be benefited or injured by the conduct of man, and that he was, therefore, under no inducement to treat him otherwise than impartially. WHAT ADVANTAGE WILL IT BE UNTO THEE? - see the notes at Job 34:9. The phrase “unto thee,” refers to Job himself. He had said this to himself; or to his own soul. Such a mode of expression is not uncommon in the Scriptures....

EXPOSITION JOB 35:1 In this short chapter, once more Elihu addresses himself to Job, first (verses 1-8) answering his complaint that a life of righteousness has brought him no correspondent blessings; and then (verses 9-14) explaining to him that his prayers and appeals to God have probably not been answered because they were not preferred in a right spirit, _i.e. _with faith and humility. Finally (verse 15, 16), he condemns Job for haughtiness and arrogance, and reiterates the charge that he "multiplies words without knowledge" (comp. Job 34:35-18). JOB 35:1, Job 35:2

FOR THOU SAIDST, WHAT ADVANTAGE WILL IT BE UNTO THEE?.... Meaning that his righteousness, his holy life and conversation, were of no avail to him: he received no more benefit by being righteous than if he was wicked, since God destroyed one as well as another; and since his righteousness did not secure him from afflictions and calamities, it was of no advantage to him; he had not said so in so many words, but it is inferred from what he had said, Job 9:22. Man's own righteousness is of no advantage to him as to justification before God, and acceptance with him, nor in the business of salvation, or with respect to heaven and happiness, so as to give a right and title to it; bat is of great advantage in other respects; is for self-defence against the imputations and calumnies of wicked men; it makes a man honourable and respectable among men, when to live a vicious course of life is scanda...

CHAPTER 35 _ 1. Remember the greatness of God (Job 35:1)_ 2. Why God is silent and does not answer (Job 35:9) Job 35:1. Job having kept silence Elihu continues and asks him if this is sound judgment, what he had said, “My righteousness is greater than God's righteousness.” This was the logical conclusion which Elihu drew from some of his words. Because God did not care for him the sufferer what profit was it to him if he had not sinned? Then Elihu answers and his friends as well by following Job's unjustly charge. Elihu inquires whether it is Job's righteousness which finds expression in his question as to the profitableness of religion. Let him look to the heavens and see how far God is above him. Man's sin or righteousness in no way injures or profits God, but only other men. In Job 35:2 instead of Or sayest thou, my righteousness is more than God's, translate And callest it my righteousness before God. With Job 35:5; cf. Job 22:2; cf. Job 22:12....

Statement of Job's charge against God that under His rule of the world to be righteous is no advantage to a man. The verses read, 2. Thinkest thou this to be thy right, And callest thou it, My just cause against God, 3. That thou sayest, What advantage hast thou? And, What am I profited more than if I had sinned? Throughout Elihu's speeches there runs the idea of a cause or plea between Job and God. Job is regarded by him as maintaining that he has a right or just cause against God. Elihu here asks if Job considers that the rectitude of his cause will appear in his maintaining that godliness profits a man nothing? the word _this_in Job 35:2 refers to the questions in Job 35:3.
