5._The glory which I had with thee. _He desires to be _glorified with the Father_, not that the Father may _glorify _him secretly, without any witnesses, but that, having been received into heaven, he may give a magnificent display of his greatness and power, _that every knee may bow to him_, (Philippians 2:10.) Verse John 17:5. _BEFORE THE WORLD WAS._] That is, from eternity, before there was any _creation_-so the phrase, and others similar to it, are taken in the sacred writings; see John 17:24; Psalms 90:2; Ephesians 1:4. WITH THINE OWN SELF - In heaven, granting me a participation of the same honor which the Father has. He had just said that he had glorified God on the earth, he now prays that God would glorify him in heaven. WITH THE GLORY - With the honor. This word also includes the notion of happiness, or everything which could render the condition blessed. BEFORE THE WORLD WAS - There could not be a more distinct and clear declaration of the pre-existence of Christ than this. It means before the creation of the world; before there was any world. John 17:1. _These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come;_ This is in a very special sense our Lord's prayer. What a word that is from the lips of Jesus, «Father»! JOHN 13:33 TO JOHN 17:26. THE LAST DISCOURSES AND PRAYER. Perhaps this is the best place to consider the general arrangement and character of the final discourses. They present the same problems of style and language, of content and of arrangement, that are raised elsewhere in this gospel. The language and the theology of the author are conspicuous.
