Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. VERILY, VERILY, I SAY UNTO YOU, THE HOUR IS COMING, [ erchetai (G2064) hoora (G5610)] - or, 'There cometh an hour;' that is, in its whole fullness it was only "coming," namely, at Pentecost. AND NOW IS - in its beginnings. WHEN THE DEAD - the spiritually dead, as is clear from John 5:28, (see the note at Luke 9:64 ,) SHALL HEAR THE VOICE OF THE SON OF GOD. 25._Verily, verily _When the Evangelist represents the Son of God as swearing so frequently in reference to our salvation, hence we perceive, first, how eagerly he desires our welfare, and next, of how great importance it is that the faith of the Gospel should be deeply fixed and thoroughly confirmed. The statement has indeed some appearance of being incredible, when we are told that this is the effect of the faith of which Christ speaks; and therefore he confirms by an oath that the voice of his Gospel has such power of giving life that it is powerful to _raise the dead _It is generally agreed that he speaks of spiritual death; for those who refer it to Lazarus, (John 11:44,) and to the widow’s son at Nain, (Luke 7:15,) and similar instances, are refuted by what follows. 24-29 Our Lord declared his authority and character, as the Messiah. The time was come when the dead should hear his voice, as the Son of God, and live. Our Lord first refers to his raising those who were dead in sin, to newness of life, by the power of the Spirit, and then to his raising the dead in their graves. The office of Judge of all men, can only be exercised by one who has all knowledge, and almighty power. May we believe His testimony; thus our faith and hope will be in God, and we shall not come into condemnation. And may His voice reach the hearts of those dead in sin; that they may do works meet for repentance, and prepare for the solemn day....

Verse 25. _THE DEAD SHALL HEAR THE VOICE_] Three kinds of death are mentioned in the Scriptures: _natural, spiritual_, and _eternal_. The _first_ consists in the separation of the body and soul. The _second_ in the separation of God and the soul. The _third_ in the separation of body and soul from God in the other world. Answerable to these three kinds of death, there is a _threefold_ _life: Natural_ life, which consists in the union of the soul and body. _Spiritual life_, which consists in the union of God and the soul, by faith and love. _Eternal_ life, which consist in the communion of the body and soul with God, by holiness, in the realms of bliss. Of the _dead_, our Lord says, _the hour is coming, and now is, when_ _they shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and live_. The hour is _coming_, when all that sleep in the dust shall awake at the voice of the Son of man,

THE HOUR - The time. IS COMING - Under the preaching of the gospel, as well as in the resurrection of the dead. NOW IS - It is now taking place. Sinners were converted under his ministry and brought to spiritual life. THE DEAD - Either the dead in sins, or those that are in their graves. The words of the Saviour will apply to either. Language, in the Scriptures, is often so used as to describe two similar events. Thus the destruction of Jerusalem and the end of the world are described by Jesus in the same language, Matt. 24–25. John 5:24. _Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life,_ If we truly believe the word of Christ, and trust in him who sent his Son into the world, we have at this moment everlasting life. THE SON'S DEPENDENCE ON THE FATHER. JUDGMENT AND LIFEGIVING. To the charge of blasphemy He answers that a son can only do what he has learned to do by watching his father, who out of love shows him how to work. So the Father will show Messiah, the Son, even greater things, so that men will experience the wonder which leads to faith. The greater work is the quickening of the spiritually dead. This will be done not arbitrarily but according to God's will. So the judgment which the Father commits to Messiah will be wrought out. The acceptance or rejection of this spiritual quickening is its test. And its object (John 5:23) is that men should pay due honour to the Son. In John 5:24 Jesus introduces, as usually when Verily, verily occurs, a further thought. Acceptance of His message and faith in His sender gives men true life
