Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, MARVEL NOT AT THIS - this committal of all judgment to the Son of Man. FOR THE HOUR IS COMING - or, 'there cometh an hour.' But here our Lord adds not, "and now is," as in ; because the hour there intended was to arrive almost immediately, and in one sense had already come, whereas the hour here meant was not to arrive until the close of the whole dispensation of mercy. 24-29 Our Lord declared his authority and character, as the Messiah. The time was come when the dead should hear his voice, as the Son of God, and live. Our Lord first refers to his raising those who were dead in sin, to newness of life, by the power of the Spirit, and then to his raising the dead in their graves. The office of Judge of all men, can only be exercised by one who has all knowledge, and almighty power. May we believe His testimony; thus our faith and hope will be in God, and we shall not come into condemnation. And may His voice reach the hearts of those dead in sin; that they may do works meet for repentance, and prepare for the solemn day....

Verse 28. _MARVEL NOT AT THIS_] I think it quite necessary to follow here, as noted above, the punctuation of _both_ the _Syriac_, the _Armenian, Chrysostom, Damascenus, Theophylact, Euthymius_, and others; which is found also in some very good MSS. _Theophylact_ says that the common method of reading this, which he highly objects to, was the invention of _Paul_ of _Samosata_. MARVEL NOT - Do not wonder or be astonished at this. THE HOUR IS COMING - The “time” is approaching or will be. ALL THAT ARE IN THE GRAVES - All the dead, of every age and nation. They are described as “in the graves.” Though many have turned to their native dust and perished from human view, yet God sees them, and can regather their remains and raise them up to life. The phrase “all that are in the graves” does not prove that the same particles of matter will be raised up, but it is equivalent to saying “all the dead.” See the notes at 1 Corinthians 15:35. THE SON'S DEPENDENCE ON THE FATHER. JUDGMENT AND LIFEGIVING. To the charge of blasphemy He answers that a son can only do what he has learned to do by watching his father, who out of love shows him how to work. So the Father will show Messiah, the Son, even greater things, so that men will experience the wonder which leads to faith. The greater work is the quickening of the spiritually dead. This will be done not arbitrarily but according to God's will. So the judgment which the Father commits to Messiah will be wrought out. The acceptance or rejection of this spiritual quickening is its test. And its object (John 5:23) is that men should pay due honour to the Son.
