Joshua 15:6

_AND THE BORDER WENT UP TO BETH-HOGLA, AND PASSED ALONG BY THE NORTH OF BETHARABAH; AND THE BORDER WENT UP TO THE STONE OF BOHAN THE SON OF REUBEN:_ No JFB commentary on these verses....

1-12 Joshua allotted to Judah, Ephraim, and the half of Manasseh, their inheritances before they left Gilgal. Afterwards removing to Shiloh, another survey was made, and the other tribes had their portion assigned. In due time all God's people are settled....

Verse Joshua 15:6. _BETH-HOGLA_] A place between Jericho and the Dead Sea, belonging to the tribe of Benjamin, Joshua 18:21, though here serving as a frontier to the tribe of Judah. _STONE OF BOHAN_] This must have been some remarkable place, probably like the _stone of Jacob_, which afterwards became _Bethel_; but where it was situated is uncertain....

THE STONE OF BOHAN - This stone perhaps commemorated some deed of valor belonging to the wars of Joshua (compare 1 Samuel 7:12). The stone was erected on the slope of a hill (see the marginal reference), no doubt one of the range which hounds the Jordan valley on the west. But its exact site is wholly uncertain....

EXPOSITION THE LOT OF JUDAH. JOSHUA 15:1 THE LOT OF THE TRIBE OF THE CHILDREN OF JUDAH. The first twelve verses of this chapter define the boundaries of Judah. With it compare Numbers 34:3, which gives the southern border of the Israelitish territory, corresponding closely with this account of the southern border of Judah. The word _tribe _here is, as might be expected from the context מַטֶה and not שֶּׁבֶט. EVEN TO THE BORDER OF EDOM. The literal translation, which makes the passage clearer, is, "the border of Edom, the wilderness of Zin towards the dry region (נֶגְבָּה) from the extreme limit of the south תֵימָן. The latter of these words, derived from יָמִי

AND THE BORDER WENT UP TO BETHHOGLAH,.... A place in the tribe of Benjamin, mentioned along with Jericho, and probably near it, Joshua 18:21; Jerom a speaks of a place called Betagla, in his time, which was three miles from Jericho, and two from Jordan, and perhaps is this same place: AND PASSED ALONG BY THE NORTH OF BETHARABAH; another city belonged to Benjamin, Joshua 18:22; and lay in a as its name shows; or in a plain, as the Targum: AND THE BORDER WENT UP TO THE STONE OF BOHAN THE SON OF REUBEN; by whom, or on whose account, it was placed, either as a sepulchral stone, he being buried there, or in memory of some famous exploit done by him there, he being one of those of the tribe of Reuben, that came with Joshua to assist in the war against the Canaani

With the help of a good concordance, or dictionary of Hebrew names, the English meaning may be ascertained. However, many of these names may be derived from

JOSHUA 15:1 reads rather confusedly. The statement is made that the following is the inheritance of Israel a late writer, wishing to be more exact, says the 9½ tribes, and then proceeds to point out how the number 9½ was obtained....

_and the border went up to Beth-hogla_ A point between Judah and Benjamin (Joshua 18:19). A magnificent spring and a ruin between Jericho and the Jordan still bear the names of _Ain-hajla_and _Kŭsr Hajla_, and are doubtless at or near the old site. _and passed along by the north of Beth-arabah_ between Beth-hogla and the highland on the west of the Jordan valley. It is mentioned below (Joshua 15:61) as one of the six cities of Judah in the sunken valley of the Jordan and the Dead Sea. _the stone of Bohan the son of Reuben_ This "Stone" is only mentioned once more, in ch. Joshua 18:17, and must have lain somewhere to the west or south-west of Beth-arabah....

_VER._ 6, 7. _AND THE BORDER WENT UP TO BETH-HOGLAH_— This border, issuing from the north point of the Dead sea, towards the west, was formed by a line which passed by _Beth-hoglah,_ a city in the tribe of Benjamin, above Beth-Arabah, whether we understand by it another city of this name in the same tribe, ch. Judges 18:21 or that mentioned ver. 61 or, with some geographers, make of these two places only one and the same city, placed on the border of the two tribes. This line went up _to the stone of Bohan the son of Reuben,_ a place famous, no doubt, for some monument which had been erected in memory of a great exploit performed there by Bohan, or because he was there buried. It then went on _toward Debir,_ (ver. 7.) a city unknown, but evidently different from that which stood in the neighbourhood of Hebron, ver. 15.—_From the valley of Achor,_ mentioned before
