_AND THEY DRAVE NOT OUT THE CANAANITES THAT DWELT IN GEZER: BUT THE CANAANITES DWELL AMONG THE_ _ EPHRAIMITES UNTO THIS DAY, AND SERVE UNDER TRIBUTE._ Drave not out the Canaanites ... serve under tribute. This is the first mention of the fatal policy of the Israelites, in neglecting the divine command (Deuteronomy 20:16) to exterminate the idolaters....

Verse Joshua 16:10. _THE CANAANITES THAT DWELT IN GEZER_] It appears that the Canaanites were not expelled from this city till the days of Solomon, when it was taken by the king of Egypt his father-in-law, who made it a present to his daughter, Solomon's queen. See 1 Kings 9:16. And see the note on Joshua 10:33. The Ephraimites, however, had so far succeeded in subjecting these people as to oblige them to pay tribute, though they could not, or at least did not, totally expel them. JOSHUA 16 F. This section deals with the inheritance of the Joseph tribes, Ephraim and Manasseh. It is composite, but the different parts are easily separated. The old narrative speaks of the tribe of Joseph, the new, _i.e._ P, of Ephraim and Manasseh. The section begins with three verses (Joshua 16:1) from the older source which give the dividing line of the lot of Joseph, _i.e._ the boundary between the N. and S.; the line goes from Jordan near Jericho, leaving Jericho on the S., and is drawn by Bethel, Bethhoron, and Gezer. One would naturally expect that this line would be the same as the southern border of Ephraim which P gives in the following verses (Joshua 16:4). The Inheritance of the Tribe of Ephraim 5. _And the border_ The border given is not traced out with the same completeness as that given above of the tribe of Judah. No mention, it will be observed, is made of the northern boundary line of the tribes descended from Joseph, although the eastern and western boundaries are implied, viz. the Jordan and the Mediterranean. _on the east side_ It is to be borne in mind that the border traced above in Joshua 16:1-3 is here presupposed. _VER._ 10. _AND THEY DRAVE NOT OUT THE CANAANITES THAT DWELT IN GEZER,_ &C.— Gezer was upon the sea-coast, in the district retained by the Philistines. Judges 1:29. _BUT THE CANAANITES—SERVE UNDER TRIBUTE_— Grotius, in his commentary upon these words, thinks that the Gezerites, when become tributaries, were forced to receive the positive laws which God had given to Abraham and Noah, and which tended to exclude all idolatry. But in another part of his works, that great critic observes, that the Gezerites were spared, as, without doubt, they surrendered immediately on being summoned. He observes the same of the Gergesenes, who remained even in the time of Jesus Christ. Matthew 8:28.
