11-16 Would we cleave to the Lord, we must always stand upon our guard, for many a soul is lost through carelessness. Love the Lord your God, and you will not leave him. Conflicts may have been severe and long, trials great and many; but at the last he will acknowledge that goodness and mercy followed him all the days of his life. Verse Joshua 23:16. _YE SHALL PERISH QUICKLY FROM OFF THE GOOD LAND_] The following note from Mr. John Trapp is very judicious: "This judgment Joshua inculcates Joshua 23:13; Joshua 23:15, and here, because he knew it would be a very grievous thing to them to forego so goodly a land, so lately gotten, and so short a while enjoyed. In the beginning of a speech ταηθη, the _milder affections_, suit best; but towards the end ταπαθη, _passionate_ and _piercing passages_; according to the orator. THE FIRST FAREWELL ADDRESS OF JOSHUA This discourse was probably delivered at Shiloh or Timnath-Serah. Unlike the Second Discourse, which is mainly a historical retrospect, it dwells chiefly upon the political future of Israel, laying special emphasis on their separateness, and the danger of social and religious intercourse with the remnant of the Canaanites.
