Verse Joshua 6:24. _ONLY THE SILVER, AND THE GOLD - THEY PUT INTO THE_ _TREASURY, C._] The people were to have no share of the spoils, because they had no hand in the conquest. God alone overthrew the city and into his treasury only the spoils were brought. This is one proof that the agitation of the air, by the sound of the people's voice, was not the cause of the fall of the city walls. _VESSELS OF BRASS AND OF IRON_. - Instead of כלי _keley_, VESSELS, the Septuagint, in the Alexandrian copy, evidently have read כל _col_, ALL, with the omission of the י _yod_; for in Joshua 6:19 they translate πας χαλκος και σιδηρος, ALL _the brass and iron_: but this reading does not appear in any of Kennicott's or De Rossi's MSS....

EXPOSITION RAHAB'S DELIVERANCE. THE CURSE ON JERICHO.— JOSHUA 6:22 HAD SAID. Here we have an instance of the use of the perfect as a pluperfect. We can hardly suppose, as Keil observes, that Joshua gave these orders in the midst of the turmoil and confusion attendant on the sack of the city (see above, Joshua 1:11; Joshua 2:1). JOSHUA 5:13 TO JOSHUA 6:27. THE CAPTURE OF JERICHO. The narrative begins at Joshua 5:13; Joshua 6:1 is an insertion (observe that RV places it in brackets), so that Joshua 6:2 should immediately follow Joshua 5:15. The captain of Yahweh's host is therefore Yahweh Himself. In the rest of the chapter we have a composite narrative, so skilfully compiled that at first sight there is not much fault to find. The Rescue of Rahab 22. _Go into the harlot's house_ We are told that Rahab's house was _upon the town wall_, and that she dwelt _upon the wall_. But though the walls of Jericho fell down flat, her house was preserved. They fell by _faith_, and she was saved by _faith_(Hebrews 11:30-31). _as ye sware unto her_ See above, Joshua 2:14....

THE CAPTURE OF JERICH This chapter describes the first and perhaps MOST decisive _action in_ the war. The impression it produced (Joshua 6:27) no doubt did much to decide the fortunes of subsequent campaigns. The strange method adopted, by divine injunction, for the reduction of the city, with its jubilee trumpets and its elaborate symbolic use of the number seven, was clearly intended to leave no doubt that the enterprise from first to last was in higher hands than Joshua's. Various attempts have been made to explain the fall of Jericho by natural causes. For instance, it has been suggested that the demonstration of the army in force round the city was intended to distract the attention of the enemy from the sapping and mining operations which were being pushed forward, and which culminated in its fall on the seventh day.
