EXPOSITION JUDGES 20:18 THE HOUSE OF GOD. In this rendering the A.V. follows the Vulgate, which has _in domum Dei, hoc est, in Silo. _But the Septuagint has Βαιθὴλ, and all the ancient authorities, as well as modern commentators, generally agree in rendering it _Bethel. _The reason, which seems a conclusive one, for so doing is that the Hebrew בית אל invariably means Bethel, and that _the house of God _is always expressed in Hebrew by בית האלהים (_beth-ha-elohim_)_. _The conclusion is that at this time the ark of God, with the tabernacle, was at Bethel, which was only seven or eight miles from Shiloh. Bethel would be eight or ten miles from Gibeah, _i.e._ about half way between Shiloh and Gibeah. ASKED COUNSEL. The same phrase as...

Their forces broken and worsted, many being killed: FOR THE MEN OF ISRAEL GAVE PLACE TO THE BENJAMINITES; at first, and made as if they were afraid of them, and so fled before them, which was only to decoy them to a greater distance from the city Gibeah: BECAUSE THEY TRUSTED UNTO THE LIERS IN WAIT, WHICH THEY HAD SET BESIDE GIBEAH; that these would not only enter the city, and burn it, but meet the Benjaminites fleeing back to it, when they should turn upon them and smite them, and so cut off all that remained of them....

The assembly of the people of God was a phrase often heard in the second Temple, but not in the days of the Judges. Judges 20:2. Clause b may be regarded as a continuation of Judges 20:29 in the narrative of A; the description of the feint is parallel to that in Judges 20:32 b....
