4-21 There are many very needful and excellent rules and cautions for hearing the word, in the parable of the sower, and the application of it. Happy are we, and for ever indebted to free grace, if the same thing that is a parable to others, with which they are only amused, is a plain truth to us, by which we are taught and governed. We ought to take heed of the things that will hinder our profiting by the word we hear; to take heed lest we hear carelessly and slightly, lest we entertain prejudices against the word we hear; and to take heed to our spirits after we have heard the word, lest we lose what we have gained. Verse Luke 8:12. _THOSE BY THE WAY SIDE_] Bishop PEARCE thinks that Luke by ον here means σποροι, the _seeds_, though he acknowledges that he has never found such a word as σποροι in the plural number signifying _seeds_....

The word of God, though only by accident, and very carelessly, and without understanding what they hear: THEN COMETH THE DEVIL; signified by the fowls of the air: AND TAKETH AWAY THE WORD OUT OF THEIR HEARTS, or memories; that little of it, which is retained there, and diverts their minds from it by other objects; so that they quite forget what they have heard; LEST THEY SHOULD BELIEVE, AND BE SAVED: this clause is only in Luke; and with it may be compared 2 Corinthians 4:4 for with true faith in Christ the sum and substance of the word salvation is connected; and Satan being an enemy to the salvation of souls, does all he can to hinder their faith in him....

PARABLE OF THE SOWER (Mark 4:1 *, Matthew 13:4 *). Having dropped Mk. at Luke 6:19, Lk. here resumes his predecessor's narrative, though reserving Mark 3:20 till later. Lk.'s version is the shortest of the three. His variations, especially in the interpretation, are interesting but call for no comment here....
