1-11 Christ's coming into Jerusalem thus remarkably, shows that he was not afraid of the power and malice of his enemies. This would encourage his disciples who were full of fear. Also, that he was not disquieted at the thoughts of his approaching sufferings. But all marked his humiliation; and these matters teach us not to mind high things, but to condescend to those of low estate. How ill it becomes Christians to take state, when Christ was so far from claiming it! They welcomed his person; Blessed is he that cometh, the "He that should come," so often promised, so long expected; he comes in the name of the Lord. Let him have our best affections; he is a blessed Saviour, and brings blessings to us, and blessed be He that sent him. Praises be to our God, who is in the highest heavens, over all, God blessed for ever....

Verse Mark 11:3. _AND STRAIGHTWAY HE WILL SEND HIM HITHER._] From the text, I think it is exceedingly plain, that our Lord did not _beg_, but _borrow_, the colt; therefore the latter clause of this verse should be understood as the promise of _returning_ him. Is not the proper translation the following? _And if any one say to you, Why_ _do ye this? Say, the Lord hath need of him, and will speedily_ _send him back hither_ - και ευθεως αυτον αποστελλει ὡδε. Some eminent critics take the same view of the passage....

EXPOSITION MARK 11:1 AND WHEN THEY DREW NIGH UNTO JERUSALEM, UNTO BETHPHAGE AND BETHANY, AT THE MOUNT OF OLIVES. St. Matthew (Matthew 21:1) says, "When they drew nigh unto Jerusalem, and came unto Bethphage." St. Mark mentions the three places together, because Bethphage and Bethany, being near together, were also both of them close to Jerusalem. The distance from Jericho to Jerusalem (about seventeen miles) would involve a journey of about seven hours. The country between Jerusalem and Jericho is hilly, rugged, and desolate. It is from the height overhanging Bethany that the finest view of Jerusalem is gained. It appears from St. John (John 12:1)

AND IF ANY MAN SAY UNTO YOU,.... As very likely they would, and it would be strange if they should not say something to them, especially the owners of it: WHY DO YE THIS? Why do ye untie the ass, and attempt to carry it away, when it is none of your own, and it belongs to another man? Are the words kai. euvqu.j auvto.n avposte,llei pa,lin w-de part of the message, or a statement of what will happen? Matthew ( Matthew 21:3) evidently took the words in the latter sense. The presence, however, of pa,lin in most witnesses suggests that the words, as part of the message, give assurance that the animal is to be returned after Jesus has used it. Although it may be argued that copyists, moved by considerations of what would become of the animal, inserted pa,lin before or after the verb, the fact that similar considerations did not operate...

THE TRIUMPHAL ENTRY. This incident Wellhausen and HNT regard as opening a new section of the gospel, which they end with Mark 13:37. Jesus is now close to Jerusalem, Bethphage (house of young figs) being apparently between Jerusalem and Bethany (? house of dates, so Swete, or house of unripe fruit, EBi, col. 548) and forming one of the limits of the Sabbatic zone round Jerusalem. In the neighbourhood of this village, Jesus adopts a plan which possessed and seems to have been intended to possess Messianic significance.
