18._And I say to thee. _By these words Christ declares how highly he is delighted with the confession of Peter, since he bestows upon it so large a reward. For, though he had already given to his disciple, Simon, the name of _Peter_, (Matthew 10:2; John 1:42,) and had, out of his undeserved goodness, appointed him to be an apostle, yet these gifts, though freely bestowed, (439) are here ascribed to faith as if they had been a reward, which we not unfrequently find in Scripture. Our Lord declared Peter to be blessed, as the teaching of God made him differ from his unbelieving countrymen. Christ added that he had named him Peter, in allusion to his stability or firmness in professing the truth. The word translated "rock," is not the same word as Peter, but is of a similar meaning. Nothing can be more wrong than to suppose that Christ meant the person of Peter was the rock. Verse Matthew 16:18. _THOU ART PETER_] This was the same as if he had said, _I acknowledge thee for one of my disciples_-for this name was given him by our Lord when he first called him to the apostleship. See John 1:42. _Peter_, πετρος, signifies a stone, or fragment of a _rock_; and our Lord, whose constant custom it was to rise to _heavenly_ things through the medium of _earthly_, takes occasion from the name, the _metaphorical_ meaning of which was _strength_ and _stability_, to point out the solidity of the confession, and the _stability_ of that cause which should be founded on THE CHRIST, _the_ SON _of the_ LIVING GOD.
