Nehemiah 12:44

_AND AT THAT TIME WERE SOME APPOINTED OVER THE CHAMBERS FOR THE TREASURES, FOR THE OFFERINGS, FOR THE FIRSTFRUITS, AND FOR THE TITHES, TO GATHER INTO THEM OUT OF THE FIELDS OF THE CITIES THE PORTIONS OF THE LAW FOR THE PRIESTS AND LEVITES: FOR JUDAH REJOICED FOR THE PRIESTS AND FOR THE LEVITES THAT WAITED._ Portions of the law - i:e., prescribed by the law. FOR JUDAH REJOICED FOR THE PRIESTS AND ... LEVITES THAT WAITED. The cause of this general satisfaction was either the full restoration of the temple service and the re-organized provision for the permanent support of the ministry, or it was the pious character and eminent gifts of the guardians of religion....

44-47 When the solemnities of a thanksgiving day leave such impressions on ministers and people, that both are more careful and cheerful in doing their duty, they are indeed acceptable to the Lord, and turn to good account. And whatever we do, must be purified by the blood of sprinkling, and by the grace of the Holy Spirit, or it cannot be acceptable to God....

JUDAH REJOICED - Judah’s satisfaction with the priests and Levites took the shape of increased offerings, more ample tithes, and the like, from where the appointment of treasuries and treasurers became necessary....

PROVISION FOR THE PRIESTS AND LEVITES. Probably an insertion by the Chronicler. Nehemiah 12:44. on that day: better, with AV, at that time, which is, in accordance with the Heb., more indefinite (_cf._ Nehemiah 13:1). THE CHAMBERS FOR THE TREASURES: _cf._ Nehemiah 13:13; provisions would be less ambiguous than treasures. THE LEVITES THAT WAITED: better that served, _i.e._ the Temple. Nehemiah 12:45. kept the ward: _i.e._ performed the service. AND SO DID: _i.e._ according to what their special duties were. ACCORDING. SON: this was in accordance wit

SOME. men. Hebrew. _'enosh._ App-14. OFFERINGS. heave offerings. INTO THEM. by them: i.e. these officers; not into the chambers, for "chambers" is fem, and "them" is masculine OF THE LAW. So in Cod. Hillel; but some codices, with one early printed edition, read "portions for thanksgiving"....

_at that time_ R.V. ON THAT DAY. This is not an allusion to the day of rejoicing in the previous verse (-that day" Nehemiah 12:43), but a general definition of time which the Compiler uses again in Nehemiah 8:1. It is only a little less indefinite than -in those days," Nehemiah 13:15; Nehemiah 13:23. _some_ R.V. MEN. _the chambers_ The Hebrew word here used occurs elsewhere only in Nehemiah 3:30, and Nehemiah 13:7....

7. Concern is expressed over the support of the Levites. TEXT, NEHEMIAH 12:44-47 44 On that day men were also appointed over the chambers for the stores, the contributions, the first fruits, and the tithes, to gather into them from the fields of the cities the portions required by the law for the priests and Levites; for Judah rejoiced over the priests and Levites who served. 45 For they performed the worship of their God and the service of purification, together with the singers and the gatekeepers in accordance with the command of David and of his son Solomon. 46 For in the days of David and Asaph, in ancient times, there were leaders of the singers, songs of praise and hymns of thanksgiving to God. 47 And so all Israel in the days of Zerubbabel and Nehemiah gave the portions due the singers and the gatekeepers as each day
