_AND, BEHOLD, ONE OF THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL CAME AND BROUGHT UNTO HIS BRETHREN A MIDIANITISH WOMAN IN THE SIGHT OF MOSES, AND IN THE SIGHT OF ALL THE CONGREGATION OF THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL, WHO WERE WEEPING BEFORE_ _ THE DOOR OF THE TABERNACLE OF THE CONGREGATION._ Behold, one of the children of Israel ... brought. This flagitious act most probably occurred about the time when the order was given, or at least before its execution; and the very fact of so gross an immorality being publicly and unblushingly committed by a prince of one of the tribes, shows the frightful extent of the corruption that prevailed. Verse Numbers 25:6. _ONE OF THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL_] _Zimri_, the son of _Salu_, a prince of a chief family in the tribe of _Simeon_, Numbers 25:14, _brought a Midianitish woman, Cozbi_, daughter of _Zur_, head over a people of one of the chief families in Midian, Numbers 25:15. The _condition_ of these two persons plainly proves it to have been a _matrimonial_ alliance, the one was a _prince_, the other a _princess_; therefore I must conclude that fornication or whoredom, in the common sense of the word, was not practised on this occasion. A MIDIANITE WOMAN - literally, “the Midianite woman,” the particular one by whom he had been enticed (compare Numbers 25:15 and Numbers 31:18). Her high rank proves that Zimri had not fallen in with her by mere chance, but had been deliberately singled out by the Midianites as one whom they must at any price lead astray. NUMBERS 25. In this chapter fragments of two distinct narratives have been united. In the first (from JE), the Israelites sin with _Moabite_ women, and the sin is punished by the _judicial execution_ of the offenders. In the second (from P), the sin is committed with _Midianite_ women, and is avenged by a _plague._ The first fragment lacks a conclusion, the second its beginning. NUMBERS 25:1. (JE).
