Verse Proverbs 23:26. _MY SON, GIVE ME THINE HEART_] This is the speech of God to every _human soul_; give thy _affections_ to _God_, so as to love him with all thy heart, soul, mind, and strength. _AND LET THINE EYES OBSERVE MY WAYS._] Be obedient to me in all things. _My son_, thou believest that I AM, and that I AM the _Fountain of all good_. _Give me thy heart_; it is I alone who can make thee happy. _Observe my ways_-follow me; do what is right in my sight. These words are not the words of Solomon to his son, for a greater than Solomon is here; besides, the claim and possession of the heart do not belong to a creature, but to God; but they are the words of Wisdom, or Christ, to everyone of his sons, the children the Father has given him in covenant; who are adopted through him, regenerated by his Spirit and grace, begotten by his word and ministers as instruments, and born and brought up in his church, and to whom he stands in the relation of the everlasting Father. CHAPTER 23 INSTRUCTIONS CONTINUED The opening proverbs of this chapter treat of self-restraint in curbing the appetite and give manners to be observed in the presence of a superior. Warnings against riches and their uncertainty are contained in Proverbs 23:4 and Proverbs 23:5. How well it would be if the great mass of professing Christians, and some true believers also, would consider this instruction: “Labor not to be rich.” But this exhortation as well as the exhortation in 1Ti 6:1-10 is overlooked, and many who profess to have their riches in Christ, in the heavenly places and never ending glory, weary themselves with earthly gain, and aim to become wealthy. DISCOURSE: 806 THE DUTY OF GIVING THE HEART TO GOD Proverbs 23:26. _My Son, give me thy heart_. THIS address, however it may be considered in some respect as delivered by Solomon to his son, must certainly be understood as proceeding from Him who is Wisdom in the abstract, Wisdom personified, even from the Lord Jesus Christ [Note: Proverbs 8:1; Proverbs 8:22]: and as directed generally to all the children of men, but especially to those who regard him as their Sovereign Lord. And though the more immediate object of the address may seem scarcely suited to this view of it, (because those who are possessed even of incipient piety may seem less likely to fall into the snare which is there spoken of,)
