Proverbs 24:5

A wise man is strong; yea, a man of knowledge increaseth strength. A WISE MAN (HEBREW, geber (H1397 ), A HERO) IS STRONG - Hebrew, is in strength; i:e., invested with it. Wisdom more then supplies the place of bodily strength (Proverbs 21:22; Ecclesiastes 9:14)....

Verse Proverbs 24:5. _A WISE MAN_ IS _STRONG._] His wisdom enables him to construct a great variety of machines, by which, under his own influence, he can do the labour of a hundred or even a thousand men. But in all cases _wisdom_ gives _power_ and _influence_; and he who _is wise to salvation_ can overcome even Satan himself. The _Septuagint_ has: "The wise is better than the strong; and the man who has prudence, than a stout husbandman....

IS STRONG - literally, as in the margin; i. e., rooted and established in strength....

EXPOSITION PROVERBS 24:1 We return here to the more usual form, the tetrastich. BE NOT THOU ENVIOUS AGAINST EVIL MEN (see on Proverbs 23:17, where a similar warning is given, and comp. A WISE MAN [IS] STRONG,.... He can do that sometimes by his wisdom, and which requires strength and courage too, which another cannot do by his strength; see Proverbs 21:22. This may be understood of one that is spiritually wise, wise unto salvation, wise for another world, is made to know true wisdom in the hidden part. CHAPTER 24 INSTRUCTIONS CONTINUED In the final instructions of this chapter we find first a description of the evil men. Their heart studieth destruction; their lips talk mischief. This theme is repeatedly referred to in this chapter. In Proverbs 24:15 the evil man is addressed not to lay wait for the righteous and not to spoil his resting place. The Lord takes care of the righteous; he may be overcome by misfortunes seven times, yet will he rise again. Different it is with the wicked when he falls into mischief. Yet there must be no rejoicing over the fall of the enemy, nor gladness when he stumbled. This displeaseth the Lord. Still higher is the command of the New Testament, “Love your enemies; ... recompense no man evil for evil; ... overcome evil with good.” There is to be no fretting because of evil men nor envy ...

PROVERBS 24:7 A. Lit. Wisdom is corals to the fool. RV involves a change m the text, which gives perhaps the best sense that can be made of an obviously corrupt stanza. Proverbs 24:9. thought: the word means plan or device, and is used in both a good and a bad sense in Pr. Here the meaning is that sin is the kind of plan which folly engages in, sin is folly's plan. Proverbs 24:10. An incomplete aphorism. As it stands its probable meaning is, If thou art slack, thy strength will be narrow (_i.e._ restricted) in the day of trouble. Proverbs 24:11 f. _strong_ Lit. IN STRENGTH, A.V. and R.V. marg. Comp. The voice of Jehovah is in might; The voice of Jehovah is in majesty. Psalms 29:4. "The expression is more forcible than if adjectives denoting these qualities (-mighty," -majestic") had been used. Comp. ἐν ἐξουσίᾳ, Luke 4:32; ἐν ἰσχύϊ (rec.), Revelation 18:2." Bp Perowne. A WISE MAN IS STRONG— The LXX read, _A wise man is better than a strong one, and a man of understanding than a strong labourer._ This reading seems preferable to ours; which, however, may imply according to the original, _A wise man is better than a strong one, and a man of knowledge than he who is mighty in strength._ The following verse is connected with this, as a proof how much wisdom is preferable to strength. _For by wise counsel,_ &c. i.e. "This is plainly seen in war itself, wherein success is often owing more to conduct than force." The LXX support this meaning....
