1-14 Solomon cautions all young men, as his children, to abstain from fleshly lusts. Some, by the adulterous woman, here understand idolatry, false doctrine, which tends to lead astray men's minds and manners; but the direct view is to warn against seventh-commandment sins. Often these have been, and still are, Satan's method of drawing men from the worship of God into false religion. Consider how fatal the consequences; how bitter the fruit! Take it any way, it wounds. Verse Proverbs 5:11. _WHEN THY FLESH AND THY BODY ARE CONSUMED_] The word שאר _shear_, which we render body, signifies properly the _remains,_ _residue_, or _remnant_ of a thing: and is applied here to denote the _breathing carcass, putrid_ with the _concomitant disease_ of debauchery: a public reproach which the justice of God entails on this species of iniquity. The _mourning_ here spoken of is of the most excessive kind: the word נהם _naham_ is often applied to the _growling of a lion_, and the _hoarse incessant murmuring_ of the sea. We must recollect the great desire which the Hebrews had for children and a numerous family, in order fully to conceive the remorse of the man who finds himself, through his own fault, incapacitated from having legitimate children; of a man used to debauchery, and surrounded with the evils which are the natural consequences of intemperance.
