To keep thee from the evil woman, from the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman. TO KEEP THEE FROM THE EVIL WOMAN, FROM THE FLATTERY OF THE TONGUE OF A STRANGE WOMAN - literally, from the flattery of the strange tongue, implying that the strange woman (i:e., one who belongs not to thee) is all tongue, and nothing substantial. A sample of , "The commandment shall keep thee." This one evil-namely, whoredom-is given as an instance to show how the commandment can keep us from all kinds of departure from God, which is spiritual adultery. This one is singled out as one to which the young are prone (and he is addressing the young primarily), and as one which springs from idleness (), and as that by which so excellent a saint as David, too, fell; that none may be too self-confident, but...

20-35 The word of God has something to say to us upon all occasions. Let not faithful reproofs ever make us uneasy. When we consider how much this sin abounds, how heinous adultery is in its own nature, of what evil consequence it is, and how certainly it destroys the spiritual life in the soul, we shall not wonder that the cautions against it are so often repeated. Let us notice the subjects of this chapter. Let us remember Him who willingly became our Surety, when we were strangers and enemies. And shall Christians, who have such prospects, motives, and examples, be slothful and careless? Shall we neglect what is pleasing to God, and what he will graciously reward? May we closely watch every sense by which poison can enter our minds or affections....

Verse Proverbs 6:24. _TO KEEP THEE FROM THE EVIL WOMAN_] Solomon had suffered sorely from this quarter; and hence his repeated cautions and warnings to others. The _strange woman_ always means one that is not a man's own; and sometimes it may also imply a _foreign harlot_, one who is also a _stranger_ to the God of Israel....

EVIL WOMAN - literally, “woman of evil.” In reading what follows, it must be remembered that the warning is against the danger of the sin of the adulterous wife....

EXPOSITION PROVERBS 6:1 The sixth chapter embraces four distinct discourses, each of which is a warning. The subjects treated of are (1) suretyship (Proverbs 6:1); (2) sloth (Proverbs 6:6); (3) malice (Proverbs 6:12); and (4) adultery (Proverbs 6:20 to the end). This is one use of the profit arising from attending to the instructions of parents, and to the law of God, as taught by them; to preserve from fornication and adultery, one of its precepts expressly forbidding adultery and all corporeal uncleanness; and the whole of it directing to an observance of all duties respecting God and our neighbour, which requires diligence and industry, and prevents idleness, that inlet to all sin, and especially to uncleanness k; FROM THE FLATTERY OF THE TONGUE OF A STRANGE WOMAN; the same with the evil woman, the lewd and adulterous one; see Proverbs 2:16.
