Psalms 108:9

Wilt not thou, O God, who hast cast us off? and wilt not thou, O God, go forth with our hosts? Prayer for God's interposition, grounded on the enemy's wickedness (Psalms 109:1); let condemnation fall on him (Satan being his accuser) as to his days and his children (Psalms 109:6); let evil fall on him property through the extortioner and the stranger, and his memory be cut off from the earth (Psalms 109:11); and this became of God's justice, which pays like with like, cursing and mercilessness to him who loved both (Psalms 109:16); deliver the needy, seeing that his need is so great ...

6-20 The Lord Jesus may speak here as a Judge, denouncing sentence on some of his enemies, to warn others. When men reject the salvation of Christ, even their prayers are numbered among their sins. See what hurries some to shameful deaths, and brings the families and estates of others to ruin; makes them and theirs despicable and hateful, and brings poverty, shame, and misery upon their posterity: it is sin, that mischievous, destructive thing. And what will be the effect of the sentence, "Go, ye cursed," upon the bodies and souls of the wicked! How it will affect the senses of the body, and the powers of the soul, with pain, anguish, horror, and despair! Think on these things, sinners, tremble and repent....

MOAB ... - This is fallen from Psalms 60:8. The only change is in the close of the verse. Instead of “Plilistia, triumph thou because of me” Psalms 60:8, it is here, “Over Philistia will I triumph.” Why the change was made is unknown....

EXPOSITION THIS is a composite psalm, made up of portions of two Davidical psalms, viz. Psalms 57:7, and Psalms 60:5, but not (probably) put into its present shape by David. It is difficult to imagine what was the occasion which was thought to call for the union of two such distinct and unconnected passages. The text, moreover, has suffered in the transfer. PSALMS 108:1 MY HEART IS FIXED. In the original form (Psalms 57:7) this emphatic phrase was reiterated, which much increased the force of the declaration. Psalms 108:1. _O God, my heart is fixed; I will sing and give praise, even with my glory. Awake, psaltery and harp: I myself will awake early. I will praise thee, O LORD, among the people: and I will sing praises unto thee among the nations. For thy mercy is great above the heavens: and thy truth reacheth unto the clouds. Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens: and thy glory above all the earth;_ Here, we begin with praise, the very praise with which we finished the other Psalm, praise in a very joyous, confident spirit, for the praise which precedes prayer has more of the «Jubilate» note in it than ordinary praise has. The prayer in Psalms 57:1 , which preceded the praise, was earnest, and fervent, and confident, yet it did not reach so high a note as this:...

CVIII. A composition from parts of Psalms 57, 60. Thus Psalms 108:1 = Psalms 57:7; Psalms 57:6 = Psalms 60:5. That Psalms 108 is a composition from two Pss. originally distinct appears further from the fact that Psalms 57, 60 are Elohistic (p. 366) and stand naturally among the other Elohistic Pss., while Psalms 108 is also Elohistic, but stands among other Pss., all Yahwistic. The compiler has combined two portions of neighbouring Elohistic Pss., leaving the mark of Elohistic revision. Owing to the union of fragments, thanks and prayer come in the reverse order....
