He shall drink of the brook in the way: therefore shall he lift up the head. HE SHALL DRINK OF THE BROOK IN THE WAY: THEREFORE SHALL HE LIFT UP THE HEAD. He shall be like an ardent warrior who, in pursuing the enemy ("in the way"), does not turn in to any place of entertainment to refresh himself, but contents himself with water, which he hastily drinks from any brook or pool [ nachal (H5158), properly a valley in the channel of which rain forms a pool]. The point is His hasty refreshment amidst His untiring zeal for the honour of God. The allusion is not specially (as Hengstenberg thinks) to Samson's being refreshed by the water produced by God at Lehi (Judges 15:15-7); for there is no mention there of "a brook," but 'a well.' 7_He shall drink _Not a few interpreters, in my opinion, expound this verse in a very harsh manner: that the carnage would be so great, as to cause the blood of the slain to flow in torrents, out of which Christ, the Conqueror, might drink till he was satiated. HE SHALL DRINK OF THE BROOK IN THE WAY - The design here seems to be to represent the Messiah as a victorious king and conqueror pursuing his enemies. In the previous verse the psalmist had represented him under the image of one engaged in battle, and slaying his enemies with a great slaughter. He here represents him as pursuing those who should escape from the battle, and as pursuing them without fainting or exhaustion. He is like one who finds abundant springs and streams of water in his journeyings; who refreshes himself at those fountains and streams; who, therefore, is not faint and weary. EXPOSITION ACCORDING to the recent criticism, which calls itself "advanced," this psalm is the composition of an unknown prophet, addressed to his earthly sovereign, communicating to him certain Divine utterances, or oracles (Psalms 110:1, Psalms 110:5), of great weight and strangeness, and promising him complete victory over all his enemies. The king is supposed by some to be David; by others, a Davidic monarch; by others, again, a Maccabee prince or king. Who is the person of whom the first verse testifies? Here is the critics' answer. “Is the Psalm Messianic? Looking at it by itself, and without prepossession, one would not say that it is, for the writer has in mind some actual ruler of his own day, and his references are to events of his own times”

We may with some confidence refer this Ps. to 141 B.C., when Simon the Maccabee prince was accepted by the people as supreme Governor, though he was not a descendant of David, and as High Priest, though he was not a descendant of Aaron's first-born (see 1Ma_14:35).
