The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. THE LORD SHALL PRESERVE THEE FROM ALL EVIL: HE SHALL PRESERVE THY SOUL. THE LORD SHALL PRESERVE THY GOING OUT, AND THY COMING IN. The thrice-repeated "shall preserve," or 'keep thee,' attests the greatness of man's unbelief, which needs so frequent assurances. 8._Jehovah will keep thy going out and thy coming in. _The sense is, Whatever thou shalt undertake or engage in during thy life shall come to a happy and successful termination. God no doubt directs by his Holy Spirit the, deliberations of his servants; but it appears to me, that this passage is rather to be referred to prosperous issues. If, however, any one would give it a more extended meaning I have no objection. It is enough for me to embrace that sense which is indisputably certain and solid, That God will be the continual guide of his people, so that stretching out his hand to them he will conduct them according to their hearts’ desire from the beginning even to the end. Farther, it is of importance to mark the reason why the Prophet repeats so often what he had briefly and in one word expressed with sufficient plainness. Verse Psalms 121:8. _THY GOING OUT AND THY COMING IN_] Night and day - in all thy business and undertakings; and this through the whole course of thy life: _for evermore_. ANALYSIS OF THE HUNDRED AND TWENTY-FIRST PSALM The scope of this Psalm is to show that God alone is the refuge of the distressed. I. While some are looking for earthly comfort and support, "I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills," c. II. Faith sees God, the only helper and says, "My help is the Lord." EXPOSITION THE preceding psalm is one of complaint; the present, one of comfort and consolation. The pilgrim lifts up his eyes to the hills, and is satisfied that help is coming to him. He then proceeds to cheer himself with assurances of God's sleepless care and protection. Metrically, the psalm falls into four stanzas of four lines each. PSALMS 121:1 I WILL LIFT UP MINE EYES UNTO THE HILLS. The "holy hills," that stand round about Jerusalem, are intended (Psalms 87:1; Psalms 125:2). Psalms 121:1. _I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help._ No help comes from anywhere else but from the eternal hills. Let us lift up our eyes, therefore, hopefully expecting help from the hills; it is on the road, it «cometh.» The psalmist with the eye of faith could see it coming, so he watched its approach. PSALM 120-134 The Psalms of Degrees Fifteen brief Psalms follow, called songs of degrees, or, ascents. They were in all probability used by Israel going up to Jerusalem three times a year to celebrate the feasts of the Lord--”Whither the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD, a testimony for Israel, to give thanks unto the name of the LORD.” They are indeed Psalms of “the goings-up” for we rise higher and higher as we read through them.
