5-10 The psalmist encourages us to put confidence in God. We must hope in the providence of God for all we need as to this life, and in the grace of God for that which is to come. The God of heaven became a man that he might become our salvation. Though he died on the cross for our sins, and was laid in the grave, yet his thoughts of love to us did not perish; he rose again to fulfil them. When on earth, his miracles were examples of what he is still doing every day. He grants deliverance to captives bound in the chains of sin and Satan. He opens the eyes of the understanding. He feeds with the bread of life those who hunger for salvation; and he is the constant Friend of the poor in spirit, the helpless: with him poor sinners, that are as fatherless, find mercy; and his kingdom shall continue for ever. Verse Psalms 146:8. _OPENETH_ THE EYES OF _THE BLIND_] He brings us out of our prison-house, from the _shadow of death_, and _opens our eyes_ that we may behold the _free light_ of the day. And it is the Lord only that can open the eyes of any son of Adam, and give him to see his wretchedness, and where help and salvation may be found. _RAISETH THEM THAT ARE BOWED DOWN_] Through a sense of their guilt and sinfulness. _THE LORD LOVETH THE RIGHTEOUS_] These he makes partakers of a _Divine nature_; and he loves those who bear his own image....

THE LORD OPENETH THE EYES OF THE BLIND - This is the sixth reason for what is stated as to the blessedness of those who put their trust in the Lord. The language here would be applicable to bodily or to mental blindness. Compare the notes at Psalms 119:18 : “Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.” See also the notes at Isaiah 35:5 : “Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened.” THE LORD RAISETH THEM THAT ARE BOWED DOWN - This is the seventh reason why they are happy who trust in the Lord. EXPOSITION THE psalter ends with a cluster of "Hallelujah Psalms," five in number, all of them both beginning and ending with the phrase. In the Hebrew none of them has any" title;" but it is generally considered that the Septuagint title of the majority—Ἀγγαίου καὶ Ζεχαρίου—embodies a true tradition, and that they are the "Songs of the Return from the Captivity," added to the Psalter by the Prophets Haggai and Zechariah. PSALM 144-150 THE HALLELUJAH CHORUS The five Psalms with which this marvellous book closeth are all Psalms of praise. The word “praise” is found in the Hebrew thirty-seven times. Each one of these Psalms begins and ends with a hallelujah; there are ten hallelujahs. First is a hallelujah which celebrates Himself, He who is the God of Jacob. Precious vision of Him who delights to call Himself “the God of Jacob,” the God who loves the sinner and has redeemed His people. Who is He? The theme of the Ps. is much the same as that of Psalms 105. Blindness is a figure for moral and spiritual ignorance and insensibility, and helplessness in general. Cp. Isaiah 29:18; Isaiah 35:5; Deuteronomy 28:19; Job 12:25; Isaiah 59:9-10. _raiseth_up _them that are bowed down_ As Psalms 145:14. _loveth_ And therefore, as P.B.V., _careth for_them. But is not this an accidental mistake, introduced into the Great Bible of 1540? Coverdale (1535) and the Great Bible of 1539 have _loveth_....
