_THEREFORE MY HEART IS GLAD, AND MY GLORY REJOICETH: MY FLESH ALSO SHALL REST IN HOPE._ Therefore - because the Lord is at my right hand. MY HEART IS GLAD - in the assurance of perfect deliverance. AND MY GLORY REJOICETH - "my glory," i:e., my soul, the most honourable part of man. Rather, 'my tongue,' as it is explained by the apostle, in accordance with the Septuagint, Acts 2:26. So Psalms 30:12, margin; 57:8; 108:1. The tongue is the glory of man above the brutes; it is the soul's interpreter, whence it derives its "glory." 9._Therefore my heart is glad. _In this verse the Psalmist commends the inestimable fruit of faith, of which Scripture every where makes mention, in that, by placing us under the protection of God, it makes us not only to live in the enjoyment of mental tranquillity, but, what is more, to live joyful and cheerful. THEREFORE MY HEART IS GLAD - In view of this fact, that my confidence is in God alone, and my belief that he is my Protector and Friend. See the notes at Acts 2:26. AND MY GLORY REJOICETH - The Septuagint translate this, “my tongue,” and this translation is followed by Peter in his quotation of the passage in Acts 2:26. See the notes at that passage. The meaning here is, that whatever there was in him that was honorable, dignified, or glorious - all the faculties of his soul, as well as his heart - had occasion to rejoice in God. EXPOSITION THE sixteenth psalm is so far connected with the fifteenth that it is exclusively concerned, like the fifteenth, with the truly righteous man. It "depicts the true Israelite as rejoicing in God as the highest Good, and placing affiance in him in the face of Death and Hades" (Kay). The ascription of it to David in the title may well be acquiesced in. It has been called "a golden psalm," and the word "Michtam" in the title has been understood in this sense; but that is more probably a musical term, like "Mizmor," "_Maschil_,"_ _"Shiggaion," etc. It is "full of the spirit of David," and remarkably evangelical in tone; its Messianic character is attested by the Apostle Peter (Acts 2:25; Acts 13:35).
