_SHEW THY MARVELLOUS LOVINGKINDNESS, O THOU THAT SAVEST BY THY RIGHT HAND THEM WHICH PUT THEIR TRUST IN THEE FROM THOSE THAT RISE UP AGAINST THEM._ Show thy marvelous loving-kindness - `Signalize thy loving-kindnesses.' The Hebrew х_ HAPLEEH_ (H6395)] is literally, single out thy loving-kindnesses, so as not to give them indiscriminately, as heretofore, even to the wicked; but now restrict them to the godly, so as to deliver these from their wicked foes. Another Hebrew form [haplee'] more usually is employed to express the English version, 'make marvelous.' But Gesenius regards the two words akin in etymology and sense. O THOU THAT SAVEST BY THY RIGHT HAND THEM WHICH PUT THEIR TRUST (IN THEE). God's character as the Saviour of believers is a strong plea for confidently asking a favourable answer to prayer. 7._Make marvellous thy mercies. _As the word הפלה,_haphleh, _signifies sometimes _to make wonderful, _or _remarkable, _and sometimes _to separate and set apart, _both these senses will be very suitable to this passage. In Psalms 31:19, the “goodness” of God is said to be “laid up” in store as a peculiar treasure “for them that fear him,” that he may bring it forth at the proper season, even when they are brought to an extremity, and when all things seem to be desperate. If, then, the translation, _separate and set apart thy mercy, _is preferred, the words are a prayer that God would display towards his servant David the special grace which he communicates to none but his chosen ones. 1-7 This psalm is a prayer. Feigned prayers are fruitless; but if our hearts lead our prayers, God will meet them with his favour. The psalmist had been used to pray, so that it was not his distress and danger that now first brought him to his duty. And he was encouraged by his faith to expect God would notice his prayers. Constant resolution and watchfulness against sins of the tongue, will be a good evidence of our integrity. Aware of man's propensity to wicked works, and of his own peculiar temptations, David had made God's word his preservative from the paths of Satan, which lead to destruction. Verse Psalms 17:7. _SHOW THY MARVELLOUS LOVINGKINDNESS_] David was now exposed to imminent danger; common interpositions of Providence could not save him; if God did not work _miracles_ for him, he must fall by the hand of Saul. Yet he lays no _claim_ to such miraculous interpositions; he expects all from God's _lovingkindness_. The common reading here is הפלה חסדיך _haphleh chasadeycha_, "distinguish thy holy ones;" but הפלא _haple_, "do wonders," is the reading of about _seventy_ MSS., some ancient editions, with the _Septuagint, Vulgate, Chaldee, Syriac_, and _Arabic_. The marginal reading of this verse is nearer the original than that of the text....

SHOW THY MARVELOUS LOVING-KINDNESS - The literal translation of the original here would be, “distinguish thy favors.” The Hebrew word used means properly “to separate; to distinguish;” then, “to make distinguished or great.” The prayer is, that God would separate his mercies on this occasion from his ordinary mercies by the manifestation of greater powers, or by showing him special favor. The ordinary or common mercies which he was receiving at the hand of God would not meet the present case. His dangers were much greater than ordinary, his wants were more pressing than usual; and he asked for an interposition of mercy corresponding with his circumstances and condition. Such is the lovingkindness of God to his people in Christ; which is sovereign, free, special, distinguishing, everlasting, and unchangeable; it is better than life, and passes knowledge; and which is set upon men and not angels, some and not all, and these many of them the worst and vilest of men, and all of them by nature children of wrath as others; and which has appeared in choosing them in Christ, putting them into his hand, and making a covenant with him for them; in sending him into the world to suffer and die for them; in regenerating, adopting, justifying, pardoning, and saving them with an everlasting salvation; all which is marvellous in their eyes, and will be the wonder of men and angels to all eternity: this sometimes is hidden from the objects of it, as it might be from the psalmist, and therefore he desires a manifestation of it to...

Psalms 17:1. _Hear the right, O LORD, attend unto my cry, give ear unto my prayer, that goeth not out of feigned lips._ Good men are often slandered and misunderstood; and, at such times, the first verse of this Psalm will well fit their lips: «Hear the right, O Lord.» And, at all times, it is a great blessing when a supplicant can say to God, «Give ear unto my prayer, that goeth not out of feigned lips.» It must be a dreadful thing to pray with lips that do not speak the truth.
