_MORE TO BE DESIRED ARE THEY THAN GOLD, YEA, THAN MUCH FINE GOLD: SWEETER ALSO THAN HONEY AND THE HONEYCOMB._ More to be desired ... fine gold. The law understood in its spiritual, reviving, and joy-bestowing power (Psalms 19:7) through Christ, our Law-fulfiller, is thus precious. The spiritual man has more pleasure in the precepts of the Lord than the carnal have in gain, or the appetite. 10._More to be desired are they than gold. _The Psalmist now exalts the law of God both on account of its price and sweetness. This commendation depends on the commendations given in the preceding verses; for the many and great advantages which he has just now enumerated, ought justly to make us account heavenly truth the highest and most excellent treasure, and to despise, when compared with it, all the gold and silver of the world. Instead of the word _fine gold, _which the Latins have called _Aurum obryzum, _(458) some render the Hebrew word _a jewel, _or _precious stones, _(459) but the other translation is more generally received, namely, _fine gold, _that is, gold which is pure and well refined in the furnace; and there are many passages of Scripture by which this rendering is confirmed. 7-10 The Holy Scripture is of much greater benefit to us than day or night, than the air we breathe, or the light of the sun. To recover man out of his fallen state, there is need of the word of God. Verse Psalms 19:10. _MORE TO BE DESIRED_ ARE THEY _THAN GOLD_] This is strictly true; but who believes it? By most men _gold_ is preferred both to _God_ and his _judgments_; and they will barter every heavenly portion for gold and silver! _SWEETER ALSO THAN HONEY_] To those whose mental taste is rectified, who have a spiritual discernment. _HONEY-COMB._] Honey is _sweet_; but honey just out of the _comb_ has a sweetness, richness and flavour, far beyond what it has after it becomes exposed to the air. Only those who have eaten of honey from the comb can feel the force of the psalmist's comparison: _it is better than gold_, yea, than _fine gold_ in the greatest quantity; it is _sweeter_ than _honey_, yea, than _honey_ from the _comb_....

MORE TO BE DESIRED ARE THEY THAN GOLD - That is, his law; or, as in the preceding verse, his judgments. They are more valuable than gold; they are of such a nature that the soul should more desire to be in possession of them than to be in possession of gold, and should value them more. The psalmist here and in the following verses describes his estimate of the worth of revealed truth as he perceived it. In the previous verses he had shown its value in the abstract; he here speaks of his own feelings in regard to it, and shows that he esteems it more than he did the objects most prized and valued among men. EXPOSITION THE nineteenth psalm is one of meditative praise. The psalmist, looking abroad over the whole world, finds two main subjects for his eulogy—first, the glorious fabric of the material creation (Psalms 19:1); and, secondly, the Divine Law which God has given to man (Psalms 19:7). Having thus poured out his heart in praise and thanksgiving to God, he turns his eye inward upon himself, and finds many shortcomings (Psalms 19:12). This Psalm has the same subject as Psalms 119:1. Both of them are full of praise of God's Word. God has written two books for us to read,-the volume of the Creation and the volume of the Sacred Scriptures,-and these two are in complete harmony. Happy are they who can read both these books, and see the same vein of teaching running through every page.
