Verse Psalms 2:12. _KISS THE SON, LEST HE BE ANGRY_] It is remarkable that the word son (בר _bar_, a Chaldee word) is not found in any of the versions except the _Syriac_, nor indeed any thing equivalent to it. The _Chaldee, Vulgate, Septuagint, Arabic_, and _AEthiopic_, have a term which signifies _doctrine_ or _discipline_: "Embrace discipline, lest the Lord be angry with you," c. This is a remarkable case, and especially that in so pure a piece of Hebrew as this poem is, a _Chaldee_ word should have been found _bar_, instead of _ben_, which adds nothing to the strength of the expression or the elegance of the poetry. I know it is supposed that _bar_ is also pure Hebrew, as well as Chaldee; but as it is taken in the former language in the sense of _purifying_, the versions probably understood it so here. Embra
