_NOW KNOW I THAT THE LORD SAVETH HIS ANOINTED; HE WILL HEAR HIM FROM HIS HOLY HEAVEN WITH THE SAVING STRENGTH OF HIS RIGHT HAND._ Now know I. The people here speak as an ideal person in the singular. Probably in the temple this verse was sung as a solo; the next verse, wherein the plural "we" occurs, was sung as a chorus. From this point the discourse is no more to the king, but of him. The "now" confirms the confident anticipation of faith individually, which had been expressed in the plural "we" more generally, and with a concluding petition, in Psalms 20:5: Now that God hath worked in me the assurance of faith, I not merely think, but 'I know' THAT THE LORD SAVETH ... HEAR HIM FROM ... HOLY HEAVEN - literally, 'from the heaven of his holiness.' The "holy heaven" above corresponds to the holy temple or "sanctuary" ...

6._Now I know. _Here there follows grateful rejoicing, in which the faithful declare that they have experienced the goodness of God in the preservation of the king. To this there is at the same time added a doctrine of faith, namely, that God showed by the effect that he put forth his power in maintaining the kingdom of David, because it was founded upon his calling. The meaning is, It appears from certain experience, that God is the guardian of the kingdom which he himself set up, and of which he is the founder. Verse Psalms 20:6. _NOW KNOW I THAT THE LORD SAVETH HIS ANOINTED_] These are probably the words of the _priest_ after the victim had been consumed; and those _signs_ had accompanied the offering, which were proofs of God's _acceptance_ of the sacrifice; and, consequently, that the campaign would have a successful issue. It expresses his confident assurance of success from the interest which the people had expressed in the enterprise, as referred to in the previous verses, and from the earnestness of their prayers in his behalf and in behalf of the enterprise. EXPOSITION THIS psalm seems to have been composed for a special occasion, when David was about to proceed on an expedition against a foreign enemy. It is liturgical, and written to be recited in the court of the tabernacle by the high priest and people. The date of its composition is after the transfer of the ark from the house of Obed-edom to the city of David (2 Samuel 6:12-10), as appears from Psalms 20:2. The conjecture which attaches it to the Syrian War described in 2 Samuel 10:17-10, is probable.
