Psalms 21:4

_HE ASKED LIFE OF THEE, AND THOU GAVEST IT HIM, EVEN LENGTH OF DAYS FOR EVER AND EVER._ Life of thee ... for ever and ever - in the person of his seed (cf. 2 Samuel 7:13; also 16; Psalms 89:4)....

4._He asked life from thee. _This verse confirms what I have formerly said, that this psalm is not to be limited to the person of any one man. David’s life, it is true, was prolonged to an advanced period, so that, when he departed from this world, he was an old man, and full of days; but the course of his life was too short to be compared to this _length of days, _which is said to consist of many ages. Even if we reckon the time from the commencement of David’s reign to the captivity of Babylon, this length of days will not be made up and completed in all David’s successors. Verse Psalms 21:4. _HE ASKED LIFE OF THEE_] This verse has caused some interpreters to understand the Psalm of _Hezekiah's sickness,_ _recovery_, and the promised _addition to his life of_ fifteen _years_; but it may be more literally understood of the _Messiah_, of whom David was the _type_, and in several respects the _representative_....

HE ASKED LIFE OF THEE - An expression similar to this occurs in Psalms 61:5, “For thou, O God, hast heard my vows;...Thou wilt prolong the king’s life, and his years to many generations.” The expression in both cases implies that there had been a prayer for “life,” as if life were in danger. The expression itself would be applicable to a time of sickness, or to danger of any kind, and here it is used doubtless in reference to the exposure of life in going into battle, or in going forth to war. EXPOSITION Psalms 21:1 is generally regarded as a companion composition to Psalms 20:1, being the thanksgiving after the victory for which the preceding psalm was the supplication. It consists of three parts: (1) a direct thanksgiving to God, offered by the people on behalf of the king (Psalms 20:1); (2) an address to the king, auguring for him future successes on the ground of his recent victory (Psa 20:8 -12); and (3) a brief return to direct praise of God in two short ejaculatory sentences. Part 1 is interrupted by a pause ("Selah" ) at the end of Psalms 20:2
