3._He restoreth my soul _As it is the duty of a good shepherd to cherish his sheep, and when they are diseased or weak to nurse and support them, David declares that this was the manner in which he was treated by God. _The restoring of the soul, _as we have translated it, or _the conversion of the soul, _as it is, literally rendered, is of the same import as _to make anew, _or _to recover, _as has been already stated in the 19th psalm, at the seventh verse. By _the paths of righteousness, _he means easy and plain paths. (534) As he still continues his metaphor, it would be out of place to understand this as referring to the direction of the Holy Spirit. HE LEADETH ME BESIDE THE STILL WATERS - Margin, “waters of quietness.” Not stagnant waters, but waters not tempestuous and stormy; waters so calm, gentle, and still, as to suggest the idea of repose, and such as prompt to repose. As applied to the people of God, this denotes the calmness - the peace - the repose of the soul, when salvation flows as in a gently running stream; when there is no apprehension of want; when the heart is at; peace with God. HE RESTORETH MY SOUL - literally, “He causes my life to return.” DeWette, “He quickens me,” or causes me to live. The word soul” here means life, or spirit, and not the soul in the strict sense in which the term is now used. It refers to the spirit when exhausted, weary, or sad; and the meaning is, that God quickens or vivifies the spirit when thus exhausted. EXPOSITION THIS little psalm is an idyll of great beauty, describing the peace and calm delight which dwell with one whose trust is wholly in God. David's authorship, asserted in the title, is highly probable; but we cannot fix the poem to any special period in his lifetime; we can only say that he is beyond the days of boyhood, having already enemies (Psalms 23:5), and that he has known what it is to be in danger of death (Psalms 23:4).
