11._Be glad in Jehovah. _After teaching how ready and accessible true happiness is to all the godly, David, with much reason, exhorts them to gladness. He commands them to rejoice in the Lord, as if he had said, There is nothing to prevent them from assuring themselves of God’s favor, seeing he so liberally and so kindly offers to be reconciled to them. In the meantime, we may observe that this is the incomparable fruit of faith which Paul likewise commends, namely, when the consciences of the godly being quiet and cheerful, enjoy peace and spiritual joy. Wherever faith is lively, this holy rejoicing will follow. 8-11 God teaches by his word, and guides with the secret intimations of his will. David gives a word of caution to sinners. The reason for this caution is, that the way of sin will certainly end in sorrow. Here is a word of comfort to saints. They may see that a life of communion with God is far the most pleasant and comfortable. Let us rejoice, O Lord Jesus, in thee, and in thy salvation; so shall we rejoice indeed...

Verse Psalms 32:11. _BE GLAD - AND REJOICE_] Let every _righteous soul_ rejoice and glory, but let it be _in the Lord_. Man was made for _happiness_, but his happiness must be founded on holiness: and holiness, as it comes from God, must be retained by continual union with him. Probably this verse belongs to the next Psalm, and was originally its first verse. ANALYSIS OF THE THIRTY-SECOND PSALM This Psalm is _doctrinal_, and shows the happiness of the man whose sin is pardoned, and who is himself restored to the favour and image of God. It is called _maschil_, or _instruction_; and the reason of this is shown at the _eighth_ verse: "I will instruct thee, and teach thee." BE GLAD IN THE LORD - Rejoice in the Lord. Rejoice that there is a God; rejoice that he is such as he is; rejoice in his favor; find your joy - your supreme joy - in him. EXPOSITION THIS psalm has been selected by the Church for one of the "seven penitential psalms." It forms a part of the service of the synagogue on the great Day of Atonement. Yet it is almost as much jubilant as penitent. It opens with two beatitudes. The writer, while very sensible of his sin (Psalms 32:3), is still more sensible of the fact that his sin is pardoned (Psalms 32:1, Psalms 32:2, Psalms 32:7, Psalms 32:10). «A Psalm of David, Maschil»: that is to say, an instructive psalm: «Maschil.» I suppose that David wrote it after he had been forgiven and restored to divine favor.
