No wonder that in thy house, and in thy presence, there are abundant streams, and a full 'river of pleasures' for thy people to 'drink of,' for "with thee is the fountain of life" itself, including the fullness of happiness, without which existence is death, not life (Psalms 16:11; Deuteronomy 30:20). Verse Psalms 36:9. _FOR WITH THEE_ IS _THE FOUNTAIN OF LIFE_] This, in Scripture phrase, may signify a _spring of water_; for such was called among the Jews _living water_, to distinguish it from _ponds,_ _tanks_, and _reservoirs_, that were supplied by water either received from the _clouds_, or conducted into them by _pipes_ and _streams_ from other quarters. But there seems to be a higher allusion in the sacred text. כי עמך מקור חיים _ki immecha mekor chaiyim_, "For with thee is the vein of lives." FOR WITH THEE IS THE FOUNTAIN OF LIFE - The fountain or source from which all life flows. All living beings derive their origin from thee, as streams flow from fountains; all that is properly “called” life proceeds from thee; everything which makes life real life - which makes it desirable or happy - has its origin in thee. The psalmist evidently meant here to include more than mere “life” considered as animated existence. He recalls what he had referred to in the previous verses - the various blessings which proceeded from the mercy and loving-kindness of God, and which were attendant on his worship; and he here says that all this - all that makes man happy - all that can properly be regarded as “life” - proceeds from God. EXPOSITION THIS short psalm is mainly didactic. It places in contrast the extreme wickedness of the wicked and the inexhaustible fulness of love, faithfulness, and righteousness which characterizes the God whom the wicked dare to offend. It ends with a brief but earnest intercessory prayer, that God will favour the righteous and protect them from the assaults of the ungodly, followed by an expression of confidence that the prayer will be granted.
