Verse Psalms 53:5. _FOR GOD HATH SCATTERED THE BONES OF HIM THAT ENCAMPETH_ AGAINST _THEE: THOU HAST PUT THEM TO SHAME, BECAUSE GOD HATH_ _DESPISED THEM._] The reader will see, on comparing this with the fifth and sixth verses of Psalms 14:5, that the words above are mostly _added_ here to what is said _there_; and appear to be levelled against the _Babylonians_, who sacked and ruined Jerusalem, and who were now sacked and ruined in their turn. The sixth verse of Psalms 14:6, "Ye have shamed the counsel of the poor, because the Lord is his refuge," is added here by more than twenty of _Kennicott's_ and _De Rossi's_ MSS....

THERE WERE THEY IN GREAT FEAR ... - Margin, as in Hebrew, “they feared a fear.” For the general meaning of the verse, see the notes at Psalms 14:5. There is, however, an important change introduced here - the most important in the psalm. The general sentiment of two verses Psalms 14:5 in Psalms 14:1 is here compressed into one, and yet with such an important change as to show that it was by design, and apparently to adapt it to some new circumstance. EXPOSITION THIs psalm is a repetition of Psalms 45:1; with certain not very important variations. The most remarkable is the substitution throughout of" Elohim" for "Jehovah." The only variations which alter the sense are in Psalms 45:5. These cannot be accounted for by corruption, and seem to indicate a retouching of the original composition in order to adapt it to a special occasion. The expression, "upon Mahalath," or, "set to Mahalath," in the title, is thought to be a musical direction, and is explained by Dr. Kay as equivalent to the modern _Maestoso._ PSALMS 53:1 AND...

THERE WERE THEY IN GREAT, FEAR, [WHERE] NO FEAR WAS,.... Before; neither of God nor man, nor any dread of punishment, but the utmost security, Revelation 18:7; also Psalms 14:5; FOR GOD HATH SCATTERED THE BONES OF [HIM] THAT ENCAMPETH [AGAINST] THEE; either against Christ, or against his church and people; who set themselves against the person, office, and grace of Christ, and seek to distress and destroy his interest: "the bones [of such] God will scatter": that is, he will destroy antichrist and his armies, which are his strength, as the bones are the strength of the human body; and make such a carnage of them, that the fowls of the air shall eat their flesh, and their bones shall be scattered here and there; see...

FOR GOD HATH SCATTERED THE BONES OF HIM— This is generally referred to Sheba; who, being left at last to shift for himself, was shut up in the city of Abel, and there taken and beheaded; (see 2 Samuel 20:22.) after which his body, most probably, was exposed to the fowls of the air, or the wild beasts, insomuch that his _bones_ were indeed at last _scattered._ Mudge renders this and the foregoing verse thus: _Do not they observe, the dealers in vanity, devourers of my people? They eat bread: they called not upon God:_ Psalms 53:5. _They were upon the spot in a great fear, where no fear was.
