_MY SOUL, WAIT THOU ONLY UPON GOD; FOR MY EXPECTATION IS FROM HIM._ -From the enemy he turns to God, urging his own soul, as well as others, to wait only upon him. Verse 5,6. MY SOUL, WAIT THOU ONLY UPON GOD; FOR ... HE ONLY IS MY ROCK ... - almost identical with Psalms 62:1, showing that the contemplation of the wickedness of our foes should only bring us back afresh to God. "Wait thou upon God" - literally, 'be silent to God:' so Psalms 37:7; Hebrew, 'be silent to the Lord.' Only in Him, not in men of the world (Psalms 62:9), can we find rest from our agitations. 5._Nevertheless, my soul, be thou silent before God. _Here there may appear to be a slight inconsistency, inasmuch as he encourages himself to do what he had already declared himself to have done. MY SOUL, WAIT THOU ONLY UPON GOD - See the notes at Psalms 62:1. There is, in the word used here, and rendered wait, the same idea of rest or repose which occurs in Psalms 62:1. The meaning is, that he would commit the whole cause to God, and that his soul would thus be calm and without apprehension. FOR MY EXPECTATION IS FROM HIM - In Psalms 62:1, this is salvation. The idea here is, that all that he expected or hoped for must come from God. He did not rely on his fellow men; he did not rely on himself. God alone could deliver him, and he confidently believed that God would do it. Often are we in such circumstances that we feel that our only “expectation” -

EXPOSITION THIS psalm, like so many, is the cry of an afflicted one—a man of high position, whom his enemies seek to destroy, or, if that be not possible, to thrust down from his dignity (Psalms 62:3, Psalms 62:4).
