Psalms 70:4

Verse Psalms 70:4. _LET GOD BE MAGNIFIED._] Let his glory, mercy, and kindness, continually appear in the _increase_ of his own work in the souls of his followers!...

LET ALL THOSE THAT SEEK THEE ... - The only change in this verse from Psalms 40:16, is in the insertion of the word “and” in the beginning of the second clause - “and let such as love,” etc....

EXPOSITION This psalm is a detached fragment of Psalms 40:1, separated off, probably, for liturgical purposes. Except in the last clause, the name "Elohim" is substituted for "Jehovah." A few omissions are made, and one alteration which affects the sense. PSALMS 70:1 MAKE HASTE, O GOD, TO DELIVER ME. In Psalms 40:13 we find, "_Be pleased, _O Lord, to deliver me;" and this would seem to be the right way of supplying the ellipse here. MAKE HASTE TO HELP ME, O LORD. PSALMS 70:2 LET THEM BE ASHAMED AND CONFOUNDED....

LET ALL THOSE THAT SEEK THEE,.... The Targum is, "that seek doctrine (or instruction) from thee.'' REJOICE AND BE GLAD IN THEE; the Targum paraphrases it, "rejoice and be glad in thy word.'' AND LET SUCH AS LOVE THY SALVATION SAY CONTINUALLY, LET GOD BE MAGNIFIED; the Targum is, "let the glory of the Lord be increased;'' and in Psalms 40:16, instead of "God", it is "the Lord", or "Jehovah": Psalms 40:16....

Psalms 70 This Psalm is “to bring to remembrance.” It is the repetition of the last five verses of the Fortieth Psalm. The cross is again made known and the attitude of men towards that cross, those who reject Him and those that love His salvation....

REJOICE. Put by Figure of speech _Metonymy_ (of the Subject), for "have cause to rejoice", &c. GOD. Hebrew. _Elohim._ App-4. Some codices, with Aram, and Vulgate, read "Jehovah"....

Cp. Psalms 35:27. The discomfiture of the wicked gives occasion for the righteous to rejoice in God, not only because they are set free from persecution, but because they see in it the proof of God's righteous sovereignty and the unfolding of His purposes of salvation. _such as love thy salvation_ Cp. "they that love his name" (Psalms 69:36); and the corresponding N.T. thought in 2 Timothy 4:8....

The whole psalm, with only a few verbal alterations, is taken from the 40th Psalm, of which it forms a part; and it seems to have been separated for the purpose of being used by David on some particular occasion, to which the former part of that psalm was not applicable. It served to bring to his remembrance some special deliverances: and for a similar end it may well be used by us. We have many who would exult in our destruction,
