Then thou spakest in vision to thy holy one, and saidst, I have laid help upon one that is mighty; I have exalted one chosen out of the people. -Development of the original promise to David, already alluded to in Psalms 89:3 as the central ground of the psalm. First in God is represented as having promised perpetual deliverance from foes to David, and so to David's people: also special sonship, universal dominion, and perpetuity of his seed and throne. 19._Then thou spakest in vision to thy meek ones. _The Psalmist now declares at greater length why he said that the king, set over the chosen people for the preservation of the public good, was given them from heaven; namely, because he was not chosen by the suffrages of men, nor usurped at his own hand the supreme power, nor insinuated himself into it by corrupt arts, but was elected by God to be the instrument of maintaining the public good, and performed the duties of his office under the auspices and conduct of God. The design of the prophet, as we shall shortly see more clearly, is to distinguish this Divinely-appointed king from all other kings. Verse Psalms 89:19. _THEN THOU SPAKEST IN VISION TO THY HOLY ONE_] Instead of חסידך _chasidecha_, "thy holy one," חסידיך _chasideycha_, "thy holy ones," is the reading of _sixty-three_ of _Kennicott's_ and _seventy-one_ of _De Rossi's_ MSS., and a great number of _editions_ besides. If we take it in the _singular_, it most probably means _Samuel_, and refers to the _revelation_ God gave to him relative to his appointment of _David_ to be king in the stead of Saul. THEN THOU SPAKEST IN VISION - Or, by a vision. See this word explained in the notes at Isaiah 1:1. The meaning is, that God had spoken this by means of visions, or by communications made to his people by the prophets. This “vision” was especially made known to Nathan, and through him to David. See 2 Samuel 7:4. The substance of what is here said is found in that passage in Samuel.
