14-19 Before the sounding of the seventh and last trumpet, there is the usual demand of attention. The saints and angels in heaven know the right of our God and Saviour to rule over all the world. But the nations met God's wrath with their own anger. It was a time in which he was beginning to reward his people's faithful services, and sufferings; and their enemies fretted against God, and so increased their guilt, and hastened their destruction. By the opening the temple of God in heaven, may be meant, that there was a more free communication between heaven and earth; prayer and praises more freely and frequently going up, graces and blessings plentifully coming down. Verse Revelation 11:18. _THE NATIONS WERE ANGRY_] Were enraged against thy Gospel, and determined to destroy it. _THY WRATH IS COME_] The time to avenge thy servants and to destroy all thy enemies. _THE TIME OF THE DEAD, THAT THEY SHOULD BE JUDGED_] The word κρινειν, _to judge_, is often used in the sense of _to avenge_. The dead, here, may mean those who were _slain for the testimony of_ _Jesus_, and the _judging_ is the _avenging_ of their blood. _GIVE REWARD UNTO THY SERVANTS_] Who have been faithful unto death. _THE PROPHETS_] The faithful _teachers_ in the Church, _the_ _saints_-the Christians. _AND THEM THAT FEAR THY NAME_] All thy sincere followers. AND THE NATIONS WERE ANGRY - Were enraged against thee. This they had shown by their opposition to his laws; by persecuting his people; by slaying his witnesses; by all the attempts which they had made to destroy his authority on the earth. The reference here seems to be to the whole series of events preceding the final establishment of his kingdom on the earth; to all the efforts which had been made to throw off his government and to crush his church. At this period of glorious triumph it was natural to look back to those dark times when the “nations raged” (compare Psalms 2:1), and when the very existence of the church was in jeopardy. CHAPTER 11:1-18 Revelation 11:1 . We see at once how Jewish things come now into view. To apply these verses to the Church and make the temple the Church is absolutely wrong. The temple and the altar are Jewish; the holy city is Jerusalem. After the Church has left the earth the Jewish people will be fully restored to their own land, and their land restored to them. They will possess Jerusalem once more. When the Jews are once more masters in their own promised land they will erect another temple and then restore the Levitical worship as far as it is possible.
