15._Rejoice with those who rejoice, etc. _A general truth is in the third place laid down, — that the faithful, regarding each other with mutual affection, are to consider the condition of others as their own. He first specifies two particular things, — That they were to “rejoicewith the joyful, and to weep with the weeping.” For such is the nature of true love, that one prefers to weep with his brother, rather than to look at a distance on his grief, and to live in pleasure or ease. Let it be a matter of rejoicing to you when you hear of the health, prosperity, or happiness of any brother. _WEEP WITH THEM THAT WEEP._] Labour after a _compassionate_ or _sympathizing_ mind. REJOICE WITH THEM ... - This command grows out of the doctrine stated in Romans 12:4, that the church is one; that it has one interest; and therefore that there should be common sympathy in its joys and sorrows. IN THE CHRISTIAN TEMPER, _modesty_ is the first desideratum. Romans 12:3. I tell everyone that is among you not _to_ be high-minded above a right mind, but to be of a mind to be sober-minded (Sp.). This is the mind as _temper, disposition_ (so in Romans 8:5), not as _intellect_ (Romans 12:2). A modest temper comes from appreciating other men's gifts.
