Compelled assent to any doctrine, or conformity to outward observances without being convinced, would be hypocritical and of no avail. Verse Romans 14:5. _ONE MAN ESTEEMETH ONE DAY ABOVE ANOTHER_] Perhaps the word ημεραν, _day_, is here taken for _time, festival_, and such like, in which sense it is frequently used. Reference is made here to the _Jewish institutions_, and especially their _festivals_; such as the _passover, pentecost, feast of tabernacles, new moons_, _jubilee_, c. ONE MAN ESTEEMETH - Greek “judgeth” κρίνει krinei. The word is here properly translated “esteemeth;” compare Acts 13:46; Acts 16:15. The word originally has the idea of “separating,” and then “discerning,” in the act of judging. The expression means that one would set a higher value on one day than on another, or would regard it as more sacred than others. This was the case with the “Jews” uniformly, who regarded the days of their festivals, and fasts, and Sabbaths as especially sacred, and who would retain, to no inconsiderable degree, their former views, even after they became converted to Christianity. On the other hand, since the word here expresses merely a continuation rather than a causal relationship, copyists who did not appreciate this Pauline usage of the particle (for examples, see Bauer-Arndt-Gingrich-Danker, _s.v.,_ § 4), may have been tempted to delete it.
