Romans 5:9

Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. MUCH MORE THEN, BEING ('HAVING BEEN') NOW JUSTIFIED BY HIS BLOOD, WE SHALL BE SAVED FROM WRATH THROUGH HIM....

6-11 Christ died for sinners; not only such as were useless, but such as were guilty and hateful; such that their everlasting destruction would be to the glory of God's justice. Christ died to save us, not in our sins, but from our sins; and we were yet sinners when he died for us. Nay, the carnal mind is not only an enemy to God, but enmity itself, chap. Romans 8:7; Colossians 1:21. But God designed to deliver from sin, and to work a great change. While the sinful state continues, God loathes the sinner, and the sinner loathes God, Zechariah 11:8. And that for such as these Christ should die, is a mystery; no other such an instance of love is known, so that it may well be the employment of eternity to adore and wonder at it....

Verse Romans 5:9. _MUCH MORE THEN, BEING NOW JUSTIFIED_] If Jesus Christ, in his endless comparison towards us gave his _life_ for ours, while we were yet enemies; being now justified _by his_ _blood_ - by his death on the cross, and thus reconciled to God, _we_ _shall be saved from wrath_ - from _punishment_ for past transgression, _through him_ - by what he has thus suffered for us....

MUCH MORE, THEN - It is much more reasonable to expect it. There are fewer obstacles in the way. If, when we were enemies, he overcame all that was in the way of our salvation; much more have we reason to expect that he will afford us protection now that we are his friends. This is one ground of the hope expressed in Romans 5:5. BEING NOW JUSTIFIED - Pardoned; accepted as his friends. BY HIS BLOOD - By his death; Note, Romans 3:25. The fact that we are purchased by his blood, and sanctified by it, renders us sacred in the eye of God; bestows a value on us proportionate to the worth of the price of our redemption; and is a pledge that he will keep what has been so dearly bought....

MUCH MORE THEN BEING NOW JUSTIFIED BY HIS BLOOD,.... The apostle here argues from justification by Christ to salvation by him, there being a certain and inseparable connection between these two; whoever is justified shall be saved; and speaks of justification "as being now by his blood". Justification in God's mind from eternity proceeded upon the suretyship engagements of Christ to be performed in time; the Old Testament saints were justified of God with a view to the blood of the Lamb which was to be shed; this blood was "now" shed, and an application of justification by it was "now" made to the persons spoken of; which is the reason of this way of speaking. The blood of Christ intends his death, as appears from the context, and shows it to be a violent death; death by the effusion of blood. Romans 5:1. _Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: by whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also:_ Faith has such wondrous power that it makes us rejoice even in trial; it helps Christians to be glad even in the midst of sorrow. Romans 5:3. _Knowing that tribulation worketh patience;_ The more trial you have the more spiritual education you receive. You cannot learn the virtue of patience without tribulation, any more than a man can learn to be a sailor if he stops on shore: «Tribulation worketh patience;» Romans 5:4.

CHAPTER 5:1-11 1. What Justification Includes. 1-11. The blessed results of justification are next revealed. What justified believers possess and what they may enjoy is the theme of the opening verses of this chapter. The first thing mentioned is that all who are justified by faith have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Peace was made in the blood of the Cross, He who died for our sins is our peace. His greeting to the assembled disciples on the resurrection day was “Peace be unto you,” and then He showed unto them His hands and His side, and again He said, “Peace be unto you.” This peace with God we have as believers in Christ. It is settled forever and can never be disturbed. Some times Christians ask others if they made their peace with God. They mean by it, turning away from sin, repentance, conversion, surrender, etc., as if those actions from our side could make peace...

LOVE AND RECONCILIATION. Romans 5:6. The helplessness and ill-desert of the objects, and the timeliness of the intervention, go to commend God's love to us, shown in the death of Christ on our behalf a sacrifice enhanced when one considers that a righteous man will scarcely find another to die for him, though it may happen that a friend ventures his life for the good man (known and loved as such).
