2._In the hope _(or, _on account of the hope_) _of eternal life _This undoubtedly denotes the cause; for that is the force of the Greek preposition ἐπί _; _and therefore it may be translated, “On account of the hope,” or “On the hope.” True religion and the practice of godliness — begin with meditation on the heavenly life; and in like manner, when Paul (Colossians 1:5) praises the faith and love of the Colossians, he makes the cause and foundation of them to be “the hope laid up in heaven.” The Sadducees and all who confine our hope to this world, whatever they may pretend, can do nothing else than produce contempt of God, while they reduce men to the condition of cattle. Accordingly, it ought always to be the aim of a good teacher, to turn away the eyes of men from the world, that they may look up to heaven. I readily acknowledge that

Verse Titus 1:2. _IN HOPE OF ETERNAL LIFE_] In expectation of a state of _being_ and _well being_ which should last through eternity, when time should be no more. This includes, not only the _salvation of_ _the soul_ and its eternal _beatification_, but also the _resurrection_ _of the body_. IN HOPE OF ETERNAL LIFE - Margin, for. Greek, ἐπ ̓ ἐλπίδι ep' elpidi. This does not mean that Paul cherished the hope of eternal life, but that the “faith of the elect,” which he aimed to secure, was in order that people might have the hope of eternal life. While reading this chapter, we must understand that Titus was sent to Crete, to superintend the preaching of the gospel throughout that island. Crete was at that time inhabited by a people who were only partially civilized, and sunk in the very worst of vices. Paul, therefore, tells Titus to speak to them about things which would hardly be mentioned to Christians nowadays. SALUTATION. Paul sends to Titus, his true son in their common faith, his customary Christian greeting. Writing in his official capacity (1 Timothy 1:1 f.*), he appropriately emphasizes the design of his office a design based on the hope of life eternal. This is to foster in those who have responded to God's call faith and knowledge of the truth that is directed to godly living. Eternal life was promised by God before eternai ages, but the actual manifestation of His Word in its seasonable time was granted in the message with which he, Paul, was entrusted according to God's own command.
