Zechariah 6:2

In the first chariot were red horses; and in the second chariot black horses; In the first chariot were red horses; and in the second chariot black horses; IN THE FIRST CHARIOT WERE RED HORSES - implying carnage. IN THE SECOND CHARIOT BLACK HORSES - representing sorrow; also famine (Revelation 6:5: cf. - there only red, speckled and white horses were seen; here there are also black horses)....

With regard to the chariots, we have seen elsewhere that angels are compared to horsemen; for these ride swiftly as it were through the whole world to execute what God commands them: so also whatever changes take place, they are called the chariots of God; for either angels are ready at hand to do anything in obedience to God, or the very events themselves are God’s chariots, that is, they are as it were swift heralds, who announce to us what was before unknown. 1-8 This vision may represent the ways of Providence in the government of this lower world. Whatever the providences of God about us are, as to public or private affairs, we should see them all as coming from between the mountains of brass, the immoveable counsels and decrees of God; and therefore reckon it as much our folly to quarrel with them, as it is our duty to submit to them. His providences move swiftly and strongly as chariots, but all are directed and governed by his infinite wisdom and sovereign will. The red horses signify war and bloodshed. The black, signify the dismal consequences of war, famines, pestilences, and desolations. The white, signify the return of comfort, peace, and prosperity. The mixed colour, signify events of different complexions, a day of prosperity and a day of adversity. The angels go forth as messengers of God's counsels, and ministers of his justice...

Verse Zechariah 6:2. _IN THE FIRST CHARIOT_ were _red horses_] The empire of the Chaldeans, which overthrew the empire of the _Assyrians_. _THE SECOND CHARIOT BLACK HORSES_] The empire of the _Persians_ founded by _Cyrus_, which destroyed the empire of the _Chaldeans_....

The symbol is different from that in the first vision. There Zechariah 1:8, they were horses only, with their riders, to go to and fro to enquire; here they are war-chariots with their horses, to execute God’s judgments, each in their turn. In the first vision also, there is not the characteristic fourfold division, which reminds of the four world-empires of Daniel Daniel 2; after which, in both prophets, is the mention of the kingdom of Christ. Even if the grisled horses be the same as the speckled of the first vision, the black horses are wanting there, as well as the succession, in which they go forth. We notice the similarity with the first night-vision. The visions opened with the hosts of heaven upon red, speckled, and white horses. It was a vision of judgment for the Gentiles and a vision of comfort to Israel. In this last vision the chariots of judgment are seen sweeping over the earth. It seems to denote judgment in its final accomplishment. A MORE DEFINITE VERSION OF THE ALLEGORY IN ZECHARIAH 1:8 FF. Here, however, the horsemen of the former allegory, who represent messengers, are replaced by chariots which symbolise warlike agencies. By mountains of brass (or rather bronze) we are not to understand the Lebanon with its copper mines (Cheyne), for in that case we should require the definite article (read RV text, not _mg._ in Zechariah 6:1; so LXX). Perhaps the two mountains (bronze indicates their irresistible strength) are, so to speak, gateposts on the road to the four quarters of the world from the abode of God. RED. The colours are not explained by the angel as having any significance. They are not explained in Zechariah 6:5, probably because then already gone forth....
