Zechariah 8:1

Again the word of the LORD of hosts came to me, saying, After urging them to obedience by the fate of their fathers, he urges them to it by promises of coming prosperity....

Some think that at the beginning of this chapter the people are reproved for their unfaithfulness, because they conducted themselves towards God in a way they ought not to have done, as they had violated that sacred marriage which God had been pleased to contract with them; for it is a common mode of speaking for God to compare himself to jealous husbands, when he sees his Church dealing with him unfaithfully. But this meaning is inadmissible: for the verb קנא, _kona_, connected as it is here, is to be taken in a good sense, as signifying concern or affection, inasmuch as ל, _lamed_, means, “on account of,” or “for;” and we have in the first chapter a similar sentence; Zechariah 1:1 and it is evident that in many other places the meaning is no other, but that God burned with wrath against all the enemies of his Church, as he regarded his Church

1-8 The sins of Zion were her worst enemies. God will take away her sins, and then no other enemies shall hurt her. Those who profess religion must adorn their profession by godliness and honesty. When become a city of truth and a mountain of holiness, Jerusalem is peaceable and prosperous. Verses Zechariah 8:4; Zechariah 8:5, beautifully describe a state of great outward peace, attended with plenty, temperance, and contentment. The scattered Israelites shall be brought together from all parts. God will never leave nor forsake them in a way of mercy, for this he has promised them; and they shall never leave nor forsake him in a way of duty, as they have promised him. CHAPTER VIII _In this chapter God promises the continuance of his favour to_ _those who are returned from the captivity; so that upon the_ _removal of his judgments, the fasts they had observed during_ _the captivity may now be converted to so many occasions of_ _rejoicing. He likewise promises in due time a general_ _restoration of his people, and the enlargement of the Church_ _by the accession of the Gentiles_, 1-20. _The conclusion of the chapter intimates farther that the Jews,_ _after their restoration, will be instrumental in converting_...

AGAIN THE WORD OF THE LORD OF HOSTS CAME [TO ME] SAYING. The phrase, "to me", is wanting in the Hebrew text; and is the only place it is wanting in, as the Masora observes; though undoubtedly it is to be understood; and therefore is rightly supplied, as it is by the Targum, "with me". Mention being made in the latter part of the preceding chapter Zechariah 7:8 of the desolations of the earth, comfort is here administered, as Aben Ezra notes....
