4-15 Those are really in a woful condition who have the word of the Lord against them, for no word of his shall fall to the ground. God will restore his people to their rights, though long kept from them. It has been the common lot of God's people, in all ages, to be reproached and reviled. God shall be worshipped, not only by all Israel, and the strangers who join them, but by the heathen. Remote nations must be reckoned with for the wrongs done to God's people. The sufferings of the insolent and haughty in prosperity, are unpitied and unlamented. But all the desolations of flourishing nations will make way for the overturning Satan's kingdom. Let us improve our advantages, and expect the performance of every promise, praying that our Father's name may be hallowed every where, over all the earth....

THIS SHALL THEY HAVE FOR THEIR PRIDE - Literally, “This to them instead of their pride.” Contempt and shame shall be the residue of the proud man; the exaltation shall be gone, and all which they shall gain to themselves shall be shame. Moab and Ammon are the types of heretics . As they were akin to the people of God, but hating it; akin to Abraham through a lawless birth, but ever molesting the children of Abraham, so heretics profess to believe in Christ, to be children of Christ, and yet ever seek to overthrow the faith of Christians. Into the natural context of the passage a later writer has woven a prophecy of vengeance on Moab and Ammon for their revilings and insults heaped upon Judah (on the day of Jerusalem's downfall), For this their land _shall_ become waste as Sodom and Gomorrah, a perpetual desolation, overrun by nettles and saltpits, while the remnant of Judah shall plunder them and hold them in bondage. ZEPHANIAH 2:9. A POSSESSION: an obscure word, probably meaning inherited by. The desolation of Sodom and Gomorrah was proverbial (_cf._ Isaiah 1:9). ZEPHANIAH 2:11. A still later addition, universalising the judgment, but following it up with a prophecy of Yahweh s world-wide reign....

The judgment of the Day of the Lord upon the nations The nations on whom the impending judgment shall fall are: (1) the Philistines (Zephaniah 2:4); (2) Moab and Ammon (Zephaniah 2:8); (3) Cush or the Ethiopians (Zephaniah 2:12); and (4) Assyria (Zephaniah 2:13). In relation to Judah the four nations named lay respectively west, east, south, and north. The passage appears to be written in the rhythm of the _ḳinah_or Elegy, though in some verses the rhythm is imperfect. Comp. Ezekiel 19. _Cambridge Bible_, and more fully, Budde in the Zeitsch.

_GOD'S JUDGMENT AGAINST THE MOABITES AND AMMONITES -- ZEPHANIAH 2:8-11:_ God next dealt with the children of Moab and the children of Ammon, Judah's neighbors to the east. These heathen nations had insulted and threaten God's chosen nation. These nations were also idolatrous. God promised that captivity would cut off idol worship. The idols would have no more sacrifices offered to them. Their worship would be entirely destroyed. The Lord says, "He will famish all the gods of the land." God promised that these nations would become like Sodom and Gomorrah. They would be covered with thornbushes and they would become salt pits forever. They would feel the strong sting of divine wrath. Bible students remember the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah with fire from heaven. (Genesis 19) The Moabites and Ammonites would be destroyed with similar decisiveness. Then the remnant of God's pe
