_AND AFTER THAT HEZRON WAS DEAD IN CALEB-EPHRATAH, THEN ABIAH HEZRON'S WIFE BARE HIM ASHUR THE FATHER OF TEKOA._ Caleb-ephratah - so called from uniting the names of husband and wife (1 Chronicles 2:19), and supposed to be the same as was afterward called Bethlehem-ephratah. ASHUR THE FATHER OF TEKOA (2 Samuel 14:2). He is called the father, either from his being the first founder, or perhaps the ruler, of the city....

EXPOSITION The interest of this chapter owes something to the several unsatisfied questions which it suggests, to difficult and knotty points which nevertheless do not altogether counsel despair, and to occasional significant indications of sources drawn upon by the compiler, certainly quite additional to the contents of the existing books of the Old Testament. We know something of what we have to expect when the name of Israel, or Jacob, is announced in the first verse, with his twelve sons—those "patriarchs," some of whom (certainly not as many as eleven, for Reuben was absent, and, with scarcely a doubt, Benjamin), "moved with envy, sold into Egypt Joseph," the twelfth (Acts 7:9). We here enter, in fact, upon the genealogies and tables and enumeratious of collateral lines of "all Israel," to which the whole of the following seven chapters are devoted ...

AND AFTER THAT HEZRON WAS DEAD IN CALEBEPHRATAH,.... Supposed to be the same with Bethlehem; and was so called, both from Caleb the son of Hezron, and Ephrath his wife, 1 Chronicles 2:19, THEN ABIAH, HEZRON'S WIFE, BARE HIM ASHUR THE FATHER OF TEKOA; being left with child by him at his death; the whole verse is paraphrased thus in the Targum, "and after Hezron died in the house of Caleb his son in Ephrath, the wife of Hezron the daughter of Machir was left with child, and she bare to him after his death Ashur the prince of the Tekoites;'' whose son gave name very probably to the city of Tekoa, 2 Samuel 14:2....

DEAD IN CALEB-EPHRATAH. Some wrongly affirm that this grandson of Judah must have died in Egypt. True, Hezron _lived_ in Egypt, but did no one ever leave Egypt? Had he not heard of Abraham's sepulchre and Jacob's funeral? Had he no faith and no thoughts of God's promises? The difficulty is created gratuitously. His death there gave the name to the place, afterward called Beth-lehem....
