Verse 1 Chronicles 21:20. _ORNAN TURNED BACK, AND SAW THE ANGEL_] The _Septuagint_ say, _And Orna turned_, και ειδε τον βασιλεα, _and saw the KING_. The _Syriac_ and _Arabic_ say, _David saw the angel_; and do not mention Ornan in this place. _Houbigant_ translates the same reading המלך _hammalech, the king_, for המלעך _hammalach, the angel_, and vindicates his version from the parallel place, 2 Samuel 24:20, where it is said, he _saw David_: but there is no word of his seeing the _angel_. But the seeing David is mentioned in 1 Chronicles 21:21; though Houbigant supposes that the 20th verse refers to his seeing the king _while_...

EXPOSITION This very important chapter in David's history is the parallel of 2 Samuel 24:1, which contains some details not found here, _e.g._ the route taken by those who went to number Israel (2 Samuel 24:5), and omits others. This chapter furnishes one of the clearer proofs (in respect of what it supplies, _not _found in Samuel) that its indebtedness is not to that book, but to a work open as well to the compiler of Chronicles as to the writer of Samuel.
