_AND JOAB GAVE THE SUM OF THE NUMBER OF THE PEOPLE UNTO DAVID. AND ALL THEY OF ISRAEL WERE A THOUSAND THOUSAND AND AN HUNDRED THOUSAND MEN THAT DREW SWORD: AND JUDAH WAS FOUR HUNDRED THREESCORE AND TEN THOUSAND MEN THAT DREW SWORD._ Joab gave the sum. It amounted to 1,100,000 men in Israel capable of bearing arms, inclusive of the 300,000 military (1 Chronicles 27:1:), which, being already enlisted in the royal service, were not reckoned, 2 Samuel 24:9, and to 470,000 men in Judah, omitting 30,000 which formed an army of observation stationed on the Philistine frontier (2 Samuel 6:1). Verse 1 Chronicles 21:5. _ALL THEY OF ISRAEL WERE A THOUSAND THOUSAND - JUDAH_ WAS _FOUR HUNDRED THREESCORE AND TEN THOUSAND_] In the parallel place, 2 Samuel 24:9, the men of Israel are reckoned _eight hundred thousand_, and the men of Judah _five hundred_ _thousand_: see the note there....

In 2 Samuel 24:9 the numbers are different. The explanation there given is not so generally accepted as the supposition that the numbers have, in one passage or the other (or possibly in both), suffered corruption....

EXPOSITION This very important chapter in David's history is the parallel of 2 Samuel 24:1, which contains some details not found here, _e.g._ the route taken by those who went to number Israel (2 Samuel 24:5), and omits others. This chapter furnishes one of the clearer proofs (in respect of what it supplies, _not _found in Samuel) that its indebtedness is not to that book, but to a work open as well to the compiler of Chronicles as to the writer of Samuel. Its contents fall into five sections. 1. David's command to number the people, with Joab's remonstrances (2 Samuel 24:1). 2. The means taken to rouse David to a sense of his sin, and
