(50-53) If the chronicler, and not his source, be held responsible for this repetition of the Aaronite line, we may regard it as an instance of his inartificial method of making a new start. He is about to pass from the Levitical genealogies to their cities and domains, and he first partially recapitulates the line of Aaron’s sons, because their seats are to be described first. (Comp. 1 Chronicles 6:1 with 16, 18.) He stops at Ahimaaz, who lived in the age of David and Solomon, because, apparently, the preceding section was mainly concerned with the Levites of that epoch....

In this whole chapter, consisting of eighty-one verses, the one subject is the priestly tribe. This in itself reveals the standard from which the history was written. Judah, the kingly tribe, is the only one which has more space devoted to it, occupying, as it does, one hundred and two verses. These, however, center in David. In the section now under consideration, the sons of Levi, around whom the divisions of the tribe for service were made, are named-Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. Then there follows a list of the priests, which undoubtedly is intended to reveal the ground of Joshua's claim by succession. The list is not complete, for names are omitted here, to be found elsewhere in the Scripture records. The chain, however, is perfectly complete from Aaron to Jehozadak, the father of Jehoshua. Reader! do remark, with what peculiar dignity and honor Aaron is spoken of, in this sacred service of the sacrifice. Singing, no doubt, formed a very interesting part of the temple worship: but nothing compared to the ministry of sacrifices, to which Aaron and his sons were called. As all sacrifices pointed to the One Great Sacrifice: so all the priests typified that One Almighty High priest, the Lord Jesus Christ, whom both the altar, sacrifice, and priest shadowed forth and represented....
