Verse 1 Chronicles 6:71-13. We shall see from Joshua 21:28, c., that several of these cities have different names. How barren to us is this register, both of incident and interest! and yet, as barren rocks and sandy deserts make integral and necessary parts of the globe so do these genealogical tables make necessary parts of the history of providence and grace in the maintenance of truth, and the establishment of the Church of Christ. Therefore no one that fears God will either despise or lightly esteem them....

The writer evidently had before him Joshua 21, which he followed, as to its matter, closely. In some cases he perhaps modernised the ancient names (1 Chronicles 6:58, 1 Chronicles 6:60, 1 Chronicles 6:72, etc.); in a few he substituted for the old an entirely new name, the modern apellation, probably, of the ancient site 1 Chronicles 6:70, 1 Chronicles 6:77. In this whole chapter, consisting of eighty-one verses, the one subject is the priestly tribe. This in itself reveals the standard from which the history was written. Judah, the kingly tribe, is the only one which has more space devoted to it, occupying, as it does, one hundred and two verses. These, however, center in David. In the section now under consideration, the sons of Levi, around whom the divisions of the tribe for service were made, are named-Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. Then there follows a list of the priests, which undoubtedly is intended to reveal the ground of Joshua's claim by succession. The list is not complete, for names are omitted here, to be found elsewhere in the Scripture records. The chain, however, is perfectly complete from Aaron to Jehozadak, the father of Jehoshua.
